Austria’s cuisine may not be the most exciting one in the world, but it has a few staples that are so popular that you can find them in many different places around the world. The simplicity of the recipes guarantees that you’ll pretty much taste the same dish no matter where you have it, but one recipe is still kept secret. It’s the original recipe for sachertorte, a famous chocolate dessert that’s been copied thousands of times but the original is only available at a few select places.

Fit For a Prince

Sachertorte, or Sacher cake, was invented by chef Franz Sacher in 1832. The young man was only 16 when he got an order for a special dessert by Prince Klemens von Metternich. Since he loved chocolate so much, Sacher decided to use a lot of it. It was an immediate success and it’s still one of the most famous cakes in the world. The original recipe is protected by a trademark, but many bakers have tried making their own version over the years.

Where To Find It

If you want to try the original sachertorte, you have several options, mostly in Austria. There’s the Hotel Sacher in Vienna and Salzburg, Sacher Café in Innsbruck and Graz, and the duty-free shop at Vienna Airport. The only place outside of Austria that serves the cake is the Sacher Shop in the Italian city of Bolzano.
