Making hot dogs at home never comes close to the ones you buy from a random food cart or at a popular hot dog joint. But this is only because you are probably making some of these common mistakes while cooking them. Check them out below and make sure to avoid them for a satisfying hot dog experience in the comfort of your home.

Buying the Cheapest Sausages

Without a good sausage, you can’t have a good hot dog. It is as simple as that. The cheap sausages are often made from low-quality cuts and are full of all sorts of fillers that take away from the taste. If you want to have a good hot dog at home, buy a premium sausage, or even better, visit your local butcher shop.

Slicing the Sausages

In order to avoid their sausages from splitting apart while cooking, most people slice them or poke holes. However, by doing this, you are robbing your sausage of the flavorful juices that will run out through those slices and holes. Instead, simply start cooking on lower heat and gradually increase it to prevent the casing from falling apart.

Using Cold Buns

Cold buns can make even the best sausages taste underwhelming. Before constructing the hot dog, make sure to either steam the buns or toast them, so they are warm when you bite into them.

Not Experimenting with the Toppings

Maybe you like your hot dogs simple, with only mustard and ketchup as the toppings. But even so, you should give other toppings a chance and experiment to find what you like because there is a reason why topping-heavy hot dog styles like Chicago and Kansas City are so popular.

It’s getting clearer and clearer: an air fryer is one of the best kitchen appliances ever invented. According to the food blogger behind Little Sunny Kitchen, not only do air frying hot dogs save you the hassle of boiling and grilling them, but it also results in the most delicious hot dogs you can imagine.

All it takes is tossing the hot dogs in the air fryer for five to six minutes. Yes, it’s that easy. You can use the air fryer for toasting the buns too. When heated in a toaster or oven, the buns have a tendency to break or cook unevenly, but that problem does not occur with the air fryer. Throw them in for two minutes and you’ll have crunchy, toasty buns.

To take it to the next level, you can also make pigs in blankets in the air fryer. Take a regular-sized hot dog and cut it in half, then roll the two halves in the pastry and brush them with an egg wash. Cook them at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for about eight minutes until the puff pastry is golden, and they’re ready to eat.

Found at stands on street corners, at the entrance of basketball games, during barbecues and picnics, hot dogs are a popular food, eaten almost everywhere in the world.

There are many different kinds of hot dogs, and believe it or not they all include something else. The original hot dogs include a mix of beef and pork, are enclosed in a bun and topped with ketchup, mustard or relish.

While hot dogs may be a favourite when it comes to barbecue, it is far from the healthiest addition to your diet. They are highly processed meat and filled with with potential harmful chemicals, such as nitrates. A few dangerous cases have occurred with hot dogs the last few years, such as the presence of tiny shards of metal found in the packaging, listeria contamination and bone fragments found in the hot dog that can cause minor injuries.

However, if you have a true love for hot dogs and can’t imagine sitting through a game without, there are some alternatives that will make your hot dog healthier. Look for ‘all-meat’ and ‘nitrite-free’ hot dogs.
