While dried herbs that come from a container might be easier and more convenient to use while cooking, there is no denying that fresh herbs add a completely different dimension and flavor profile to dishes where they’re used. Picking fresh herbs to use in your kitchen can be a little intimidating if you’ve never done it before, so use these tips to help you out.

Verify With Your Nose

The first thing we do when selecting and buying fresh herbs is smell them. If you get a pleasant, strong aroma of the herb that you are picking up, that almost always means that it is fresh and of good quality. If not, stay away!

Always Refrigerate

After you purchase fresh herbs and bring them home, always place them in your refrigerator. This will help them stay good longer and also prevents them from drying up. When refrigerated, herbs can last up to a week.

Wash Them Well

You never know what can be found on fresh produce which is purchased, and that includes herbs. Before eating them or using them in a recipe, be sure to wash them in order to remove any unpleasant things that might be lurking on them.
