Demand for pumpkins is high around Halloween, and it may not always be possible to get as many as you’d like to complete your decorations. But if you let your imagination and creativity run loose, you’ll find out that there are many other items in the produce section that can be carved, other than pumpkins. Here are a few examples of fruit and veg that can be made just as spooky.

Pineapples

A pineapple is perfectly built for carving. First, cut the top off a couple of centimeters below the leaves. Run a serrated knife around the inside wall, leaving about an inch of flesh all the way around. Once hollow, rinse the pineapple and pet it dry with a kitchen towel. Now it’s all ready for a spooky face to be carved out. When you’re done you can put the top part back on.

Squashes

Squashes can be carved using the same techniques as a pumpkin, and they come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, which will make your decoration look more diverse and rich.

Melons

Any kind of melon is good for carving, but the red flesh of watermelon will probably make the biggest impact.
