Avocados are the best! What’s not fun is when they go bad. They’re expensive and there’s a very short period of time between when they’re hard as rocks and too squishy. But, did you know you can freeze avocados? Yeah, we had no idea either. Freezing them will keep them at their peak, so you can enjoy them later. How cool! Here’s how to freeze them.

Whole Avocados

  1. Slice the avocado in half and take out the seed and then scoop it out of the peel.
  2. Brush the halves with lemon juice to prevent them from browning.
  3. Wrap the halves tightly in plastic wrap, making sure there’s no room for air, including where the seed was.
  4. Put the avocado halves in a large freezer bag and press out the air, zip it, and place it in the freezer.
  5. When you’re ready to have the avocado, take it out of the freezer and wait for it to thaw.

Mashed Avocados

  1. Cut, seed, and scoop out the avocados into a bowl and add lemon juice.
  2. Mash the avocados.
  3. Put them in a freezer-safe bag, press out the air, zip it, and store it in the freezer.

All year long we wait for summer to come around since it has the most delicious fruit and vegetables. The produce is to die for! In addition to eating produce on its own, they can transform your meals into restaurant-quality dishes. Here are five ways to use produce with your pantry essentials to make the most delicious dinners.

Pasta

Fresh herbs, tomatoes, corn, eggplant, and chickpeas taste amazing in pastas and they pack so much more flavor than their canned alternatives. If you want to add some protein to your meal, chicken or tuna compliment veggie pasta perfectly.

Stir Fry

If you have tons of produce that’s about to go bad, chop them up and put them in a stir fry. Get creative with the produce you put in and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect combination.

Frittata

Frittatas make a healthy, hearty dinner and you can use tons of different produce including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, corn, zucchini, and eggplant.

Dinner Salad

Salads aren’t only great for lunch—they make amazing dinners. Just be sure to fill them with protein, carbs, and fats, so they’ll fill you up.

Pizza

For an easy, but delicious dinner, use a pre-made pizza dough and top it with tomato sauce, cheese, basil, and whatever other fruits and veggies you like.

Who doesn’t love shortcuts? In our busy lives, they make everything easier, especially when it comes to cooking. While some shortcuts are great like sheet pan recipes and Instant pot cooking, others like pre-made foods leave much to be desired. Not only can they be expensive, they often aren’t as tasty. Here are five pre-made foods to avoid.

Bottled Lemon or Lime Juice

These bottled juices taste nothing like fresh-squeezed ones and there are tons of preservatives added to make sure they age well. Don’t make the mistake of making cocktails or salads with bottled lemon or lime juice.

Pre-Minced Garlic

Garlic that’s been pre-cut and sold in a jar doesn’t taste anything like fresh garlic and it’s usually more bitter.

Oatmeal Packets

Really—what’s the point in oatmeal packets? Oatmeal is one of the easiest things to make and the packets are usually expensive and full of sugar.

Dried Herbs

Dried herbs aren’t nearly as tasty as fresh herbs and they won’t pack as much flavor or crunch as fresh ones.

Salad Dressings

Most salad dressings are loaded with sugar and preservatives. Salad dressing is super easy to make at home. All you need is vinegar and olive oil for a vinaigrette.

Are you thinking of eating that chocolate you have leftover from Easter or even farther back from Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or Halloween? You may be wondering if chocolate goes bad. Well, the shelf life of chocolate depends on the type, quality, and how it’s stored. So before you eat that bar of chocolate that you’re not sure is still goof, here’s how to tell if it’s safe to eat it.

How to Know

First look at the expiration date on the packaging. Chocolates taste better if they’re eaten before their best-by dates, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t eat them after the expiration date. As long as it’s stored correctly and unopened, it’s usually okay to eat chocolate a few months past the expiration date.

In general, chocolate with a higher milk content like milk or white chocolate will go bad quicker than chocolate with a lower milk content like semi-sweet, bittersweet, and dark chocolate. If there are nuts or other ingredients, the candy will go bad faster.

Chocolate Bloom

If you notice a chalky white color on the surface of the chocolate, don’t be alarmed. It’s called chocolate bloom and it happens when the chocolate is exposed to inconsistent temperature changes or if it’s exposed to moisture. This chocolate is still okay to eat, but it won’t be as fresh as it once was and the texture may be a bit off. Your best bet is to bake with it because you won’t even notice the difference.

Your chocolate should be thrown away if it smells bad, has mold, or there are cracks on the surface. If you’re in doubt, put it in the trash.

Tiger nuts—have you heard of them? While the name implies they’re a nut, it’s actually quite deceiving—they’re actually an ancient root vegetable primarily grown in Africa and Spain. They’re great for those with nut allergies as they taste like a nut, but aren’t actually one. There’s a ton of things you can do with the superfood and here are a few ways to eat them.

Raw

The beauty of tiger nuts is you can eat them right out of the bag! They come peeled or unpeeled and they make the perfect snack.

Bake with Tiger Nut Flour

While tiger nuts aren’t technically a nut, like almond flour, you can bake with it. Tiger nut flour has a subtler taste, which makes it great for baking. In addition, it’s packed with nutrients.

Top Granola, Cereal, or Trail Mix

Like other nuts, tiger nuts are a delicious addition to granola, cereal, and trail mix. They add some texture and taste to whatever you add them to.

Soak or Cook Them

Raw tiger nuts tend to be a bit hard, so if you prefer a softer nut, you can soak, boil, or roast them.

Smoothies are as good of breakfast options as they are as a snack. They’re super easy to make and they’re loaded with nutrients. But if you’re looking to go beyond just fruits and vegetables, you have to try adding these things to your favorite smoothie. We bet you haven’t had a smoothie quite like these ones before.

Avocados

Technically avocados are a fruit, but have you thought to add them to your smoothie? Avocados will make your smoothie creamier like bananas do, but without tons of sugar.

Brewed Coffee

For an boost of of caffeine, add freshly brewed coffee that’s been refrigerated, cold brew, or instant coffee. It’s a great way to start your day.

Matcha Tea Powder

To get more antioxidants in your diet, add matcha tea powder to your morning smoothie. Antioxidants are great for heart health.

Nuts

Instead of using nut butters, which are loaded with added sugars and preservatives, use whole nuts like peanuts, cashews, walnuts, and almonds which have protein, unsaturated fats, fiber, and vitamins. You can even toss a few on top of your smoothie for a nice crunch.

Cereal

Sure, it may sound a bit odd, but try adding a handful of cereal on top of your smoothie for a crunch and some extra sweetness.

Now that summer’s here, it’s time to start eating ice cream. While we eat the frozen treat year round, some people only eat when it’s hot out. If you’re one of those people, chances are you have some ice cream in your freezer that’s been there for months if not a year. But the question is, is it still good to eat? Can ice cream go bad?

Believe it or not, ice cream can go bad. It does have an expiration date. For an unopened tub, the shelf life is up to two months. After it’s opened, you have about one to two months to eat it without it tasting off. Keep in mind that “best by” dates can be a little conservative. Some people say you can eat unopened ice cream for up to two to three months past its printed date.

Contrary to popular belief, the freezer doesn’t keep your food fresh forever, it just slows the growth of bacteria, but it doesn’t stop it completely. Because there’s dairy and eggs in ice cream, even thought its pasteurized and frozen, it’s still dairy and it can go bad.

To figure out if ice cream has expired, check to see if there are ice shards on top of the lid and under the ice cream. To make ice cream last longer, make sure the container is closed and your freezer is at 0 degrees F. If you want to be extra cautious, you can place plastic wrap on top of the ice cream to create a seal that slows down the development of ice crystals.

Fluffy pancakes dossed with maple syrup are an American classic and there’s no doubt that the combination is super tasty. But, if you’re only having pancakes with maple syrup, you’re neglecting so many other delicious toppings. Here are some pancake toppings you have to try.

Sugars and Spices

If you like a relatively simple pancake, top your pancakes with powdered, granulated sugar, or cinnamon sugar. For spices, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice are great additions to pancakes, especially pumpkin or apple ones.

Honey, Syrups, and Sauces

For those who don’t want to stray too far from maple syrup, try honey, Nutella, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, coconut syrup, or fruit syrup.

Fruity Toppings

Fresh fruit on top of pancakes tastes like heaven. Some great options are fresh bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and apples. Dried fruits and jams work well also.

Creamy Toppings

Creamy toppings like soft cheeses, whipped cream, peanut butter, and ice cream really elevate basic pancakes.

Crunchy Toppings

Not only do nuts add some healthiness to your meal, they also add a nice texture when sprinkled on top. Pecans, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and macadamia nuts are all great choices.

Do you love coffee? Well, perhaps you’re ready to try the “World’s Strongest Latte”. Sound intimidating—right? Brought to you by Death Wish Coffee, which claims to have the “World’s Strongest Coffee”, this product is in latte form and it sure has a lot of caffeine! Starbucks has nothing on this latte.

Death Wish Coffee’s lattes are sold in ready-to-drink 8-ounce cans and it contains 300 milligrams of caffeine, which may not sound like that much, but in comparison to Starbucks, it’s four times the amount you’d find in an equal size pour. The beverage is 170 calories and it contains milk, but it doesn’t need to be refrigerated until the can is opened.

The World’s Strongest Latte is the company’s third ready-to-drink can. The other ones are Unsweetened Black Cold Brew and Slightly Sweetened Black Cold brew.

“The challenge of producing a great-tasting product while embracing the necessity for it to be the strongest and figuring out how to accomplish this organically is no small task. I couldn’t be prouder of the product and the experience our customers will have when they take their first of many sips. The World’s Strongest Latte adds an indulgent option to our ready-to-drink line,” Steve Frania, vice president of sales for Death Wish said in the announcement.
