Whoever said that you can’t turn coffee into a cocktail? While this staple drink might be thought of as a morning pick-me-up, there’s no reason that you can’t make a spectacular after-dinner cocktail simply with a cup of joe or a shot of espresso and a little bit of liqueur.

Check out these three choices, which all go great with coffee to make a simple and tasty drink.

Kahlua

If you like the taste of your black coffee and don’t want to alter it too much, the Mexican liqueur known as Kahlua might be right for you. Adding a splash of this sweet coffee liqueur to your joe won’t change the taste much, but it sure is good.

Amaretto

Almond and coffee go together fantastically, which makes Amaretto another great pick for adding to your coffee to make a cocktail. Don’t overdo it, as the flavor of this liqueur is strong. Just add a few drops, and you’ll be good to go.

Bailey’s Irish Cream

Cream liqueurs are another great choice for coffee, adding an alcoholic splash using a dairy product that is already commonly used with coffee. Bailey’s, which combines milk and sugar with Irish whiskey, is a natural choice.

Pumpkin spice lattes step aside, there’s a new trendy beverage—coffee cocktails. Coffee cocktails will keep you warm while giving you a nice dose of caffeine this holiday season. If you’re new to incorporating coffee into your cocktail routine, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with what goes into a coffee cocktail.

Aged Spirits

When choosing the spirits to use, aged ones are better than clear ones as they have a richer, mellower flavor and contain hints of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak.

Try it Out

If you want to try out spirits in coffee, try a classic Irish coffee and replace the Irish whisky with the spirits you would like to test out.

Quality Coffee

The key to a tasty drink is in the quality of the coffee. If the coffee isn’t good, the drink won’t taste good either. Aim for a strong espresso with not too much acidity.

Syrups with Complementary Flavors

All the syrups you’re used to seeing in coffee shops like vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, and chocolate, will pair well with coffee cocktails.

Spices

Spices like cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves make nice additions to coffee cocktails.

Bitters

If you like spices in coffee and cocktails, try adding a touch of bitters to your drink.
