If chickpea flour is not a regular part of your pantry yet, know that you’re missing out! Made from dried and ground garbanzo beans, chickpea flour has a nutty flavor and a nice golden color that will make your fried dishes look stunning. Although it can be used for all cooking, it’s especially great for frying various things.

A Recent Craze

Chickpea flour is not a new thing, but it’s getting increasingly popular today when so many people are either looking for gluten-free flour alternatives or simply wanting to try something new and healthier.

You may know chickpea flour as besan, gram, or garbanzo bean flour. It’s been an Indian cooking staple for hundreds of years and it’s now spreading around the world. It comes packed with nutrients and has many health benefits. The high content of vitamins and minerals makes it a much better alternative to regular flour and it’s a great source of folate, which is especially important in pregnancy.

Homemade Options

You can make your own chickpea at home if you have some dried chickpeas and a coffee grinder, but you can also buy it in nearly every store. If you haven’t already, it’s time to give chickpea flour a try and you may be surprised with how versatile it is.

If you’ve been meaning to try something new in the kitchen, spelt flour may be just what you need. Spelt flour is a type of wheat flour that’s made from whole grains, and it’s easier to work with than whole wheat flour. Here are three reasons why we think you should give it a try.

Taste

Spelt flour has a neutral taste with a slight acidic note, which means you can bake many different types of foods with it. It’s great for chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, and many other baked goods. You can change its flavor with different ingredients, so feel free to try out different recipes and experiment a bit.

Healthier Choice

Whole wheat flour is much better for you than regular white flour. It contains vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, minerals, and fiber, all the things that get thrown out when making regular flour. It offers more nutrients per slice and a small amount will keep you full for longer.

Easy to Work With

Unlike some special types of flour, spelt flour is not difficult to work with. You can use it as a 1:1 substitute for all-purpose flour when baking sweet foods. For breads, buns, and many other things, you may want to mix it with all-purpose flour (because of gluten) in order to get the right texture.

Have you ever followed a recipe to a T and still ended up with baked goods that were crumbly, dry, or doughy? It probably has to do with the way you measured the flour. If you’re just dipping your measuring cup into a bag of flour, you’re probably not getting the right amount of the ingredient. While the most accurate way to measure ingredients is with a kitchen scale, the next best way is the spoon and sweep method. Here’s how to do it.

Spoon

Scoop the flour with a spoon into the measuring cup, piling it slightly over the top. This prevents the flour from being too packed into the cup, leading to having more flour than the recipe intends and it also ensures that the cup is full and the sides don’t have gaps.

Sweep

When the cup is full of flour, with a knife or spatula, run it over the rim of the measuring cup to get rid of any extra flour and level it out. Sweep it into the bag of flour to prevent waste. You’ll get great baked goods every time with this method!

Cassava comes from the plant called Yucca and can be seen as a synonym for Tapioca. However, it is not exactly like Tapioca. They are made from the same plant but different parts of it. Cassava is mainly starch. It is usually used in recipes without being detected at all. It has a neutral taste and replaces the texture of gluten perfectly.

Cassava flour is also believed to be easily digested since it’s less concentrated in pure starch and is low in fat, sugar and calories.

Now, wouldn’t you try to bake pancakes with Cassava flour this weekend?
