Learning to prepare food well is one of the most important skills for developing your cooking ability. It’s an indispensable part of the process—and generally, the better the food prep, the better the food. Here are some basic top tips for transforming your prep work.

Use the Right Board

For preparing vegetables and meat it is important that you use the right kind of board. For best results, use wood or plastic boards. These are usually quite stable and are kind of the knife’s edge. Boards made out of glass or metal can blunt the knife and are too heavy.

Use a Sharp Knife

The number one rule of good food prep is always to use a sharp knife. It allows for much more precision, gives much better quality, and is much safer. Most cuts come from blunt knives that slip.

Sharpen Your Knife

To ensure that you do use a sharp knife every time, sharpen it before each session. This is what professional chefs do to make sure their cooking is always of the highest quality.

Salt the Board

To help keep the kitchen clean and to chop faster, sprinkle salt onto the chopping board. This prevents the food from flying across the room while you cut it.

Corn is a great food to know how to cook with, because it tastes great and can be used in many different dishes. But to work with corn well you need to know how to prepare it fresh. This works much better than buying it frozen or ready-prepared. Here’s how to prepare your corn so that you can get that lovely fresh taste.

Remove the Coat

First up, you need to get rid of all the skin and coating around the corn’s ear. This means pulling away the green leaves, the beardy hair, and any of the silk threads that are woven into it. It is important to get rid of the threads as otherwise these will interfere later on.

Extract the Corn

It can be really simple to collect the individual corns and extract them from the cob. All you have to do is place the corn down on the chopping board, blunt side down. This means it should be secure and balanced in the board. Next, slice down the corn in a downwards motion. All of the individual corns should fall onto the board. Repeat all the way around.

Extract the Milk

If you also want to extract the corn’s “milk”, then place a bowl on the chopping board and scrape the knife sown the corn’s husk. The milk will flow into the bowl. Repeat all the way around.

Most of us were very picky eaters when we were kids, but we learned and adapted over time and now don’t mind some things we used to. For instance, some of us used to be bothered by the peels on various fruits and vegetables. But of course, many fruits and vegetables don’t need to be peeled, despite what your five-year-old self thought. Interestingly enough, ginger is also something you don’t have to peel.

Totally Optional

Peeling ginger is one of the most tedious kitchen tasks, and most of us believe that it needs to be peeled before using it. The problem with the ginger root is its shape, which is very irregular and can make peeling very difficult. The good news is that peeling ginger is totally optional, and if you feel like skipping it, it won’t really change anything.

Know Your Ginger

Ginger peel is very thin and leaving it on won’t really make any difference. However, you should wash your ginger carefully before eating it or cooking with it. A wash under running water is good, but a scrub with a brush is even better.

In case you have ginger that’s old and wrinkly, peeling it may be necessary, but knowing all this will make you use it up before it gets to that point.

Pineapple is one of the many pleasures that summer brings, so you should enjoy it! However, if you are someone who only buys fresh pineapple already pre-cut from the grocery store, you’re wasting a lot of money for not much pineapple! Instead, buy a whole one and cut it up yourself so you can enjoy more pineapple for less money with these easy to follow steps.

  1. First, wash off the pineapple. Even though we don’t eat the skin, it’s still a good idea.
  2. Lay the pineapple on the side and cut off the top and bottom and leave them to the side. You can use the scraps for other recipes so don’t throw them away!
  3. Cut the pineapple in half vertically and work with one half at a time.
  4. Cut the pineapple into quarters along the core, because the core is too tough to eat. You can either cut off the viable flesh away from the core or just use the whole thing as scrap for another recipe like kombucha or vinegar.
  5. Cut the skin away from the flesh of the pineapple on each of the quarters and then cut the fruit into bite-size pieces or whatever size you need.
