Echinacea

This herb is great in tea and used for cold and flu prevention and a great immunity boost! Reach for a bag of echinacea tea this flu season.

Buying herbs at the supermarket is good and all, but if you have a garden or even a tiny terrace, nothing beats growing them at home. Other than the benefit of having all these lovely greens in front of you, you also get to have fresh herbs at all times to add to your food and drinks. How DIY of you! So what herbs are easy and fun to grow at home, then? Here are three.

Rosemary

Rosemary is first on the list because the highly biased writer of this article thinks its odor is just to-die-for. But other than that, it’s great to use in soup, sauce, and salad (or any other food that starts with an S, for that matter). Rosemary likes direct sunlight, so make sure you give it six to eight hours of it a day, and it also needs well-drained soil.

Basil

Basil is a super useful herb to grow at home. It smells amazing and can take every pasta, pizza, or tomato sauce to the next level. Much like rosemary, basil likes a lot of sunlight (about six hours a day). It can grow perfect both in your garden or inside the house.

Mint

Mint is truly one of the easiest herbs you can grow at home, and there are so many varieties to choose from! We all know spearmint and peppermint, but did you know there are also chocolate mint and pineapple mint? Just think of all the amazing tea you’ll be making. Mint plants can be grown both out in the garden and indoors, as long as you give them enough direct sunlight.

Growing your own herbs at home is a nice and healthy hobby, but it’s also a great way to always have fresh herbs on hand. Basil is one of the best herbs to grow in the garden because it’s versatile, healthy, and easy to care for. Here are a few great ways to use up fresh basil.

Soups

Basil is the secret ingredient that can take your vegetable soups to a whole new level. You can blend basil into soups with other veggies or simply add a dash of this herb just before serving.

Pesto

This list wouldn’t be complete without pesto—that beloved and versatile condiment that everyone should keep in the fridge. Store-bought pesto is usually expensive, but you can easily make it a home with fresh basil.

Frozen Desserts

Keep in mind that herbs can be used for preparing desserts too, not just savory dishes.  If you have some fresh basil at home you can add it to ice cream, granita or affogato, or use it for decorating cakes.

Sandwiches

In case you love Mediterranean flavors, topping your sandwiches with fresh tomato basil leaves is the best way to make them more delicious.

Drinks

Another great way to use fresh basil during summer is to add it to your favorite beverages. From lemonade and infused water to smoothies and cocktails, basil leaves can make all these drinks more refreshing.

No dish is complete without fresh herbs and spices. And when it comes to herbs, there are tons of them, so figuring out how to use them can be challenging. Herbs add flavor and nutrients to meals and they make sauces, dips, and pesto, garnishes, and drinks even tastier. Here’s how to use the five most common herbs.

Mint

Mint’s refreshing and it’s delicious in iced or hot tea or sprinkled over fresh and topped with a drizzle of honey.

Parsley

Parsley gives dishes a grassy flavor and it’s great in a parsley sauce, used as a garnish, or as a topping for roasted or grilled carrots.

Chives

Chives have the flavors of garlic and onion, so if these are too pungent, use chives instead. Make a cashew cream with chopped chives, make a vinaigrette, or add chives to a salad.

Sage

Sage has an earthy taste with hints of mint, lemon, and pepper. Saute it in a skillet with olive oil until it’s crispy and garnish dishes with it, add it to a tomato sauce, or top cocktails with it.

Rosemary

Rosemary gives meals a woodsy flavor. Before grilling or roasting veggies, sprinkle rosemary over them. Additionally, you can use it as a garnish or add it to marinades.

While dried herbs that come from a container might be easier and more convenient to use while cooking, there is no denying that fresh herbs add a completely different dimension and flavor profile to dishes where they’re used. Picking fresh herbs to use in your kitchen can be a little intimidating if you’ve never done it before, so use these tips to help you out.

After you purchase fresh herbs and bring them home, always place them in your refrigerator. This will help them stay good longer and also prevents them from drying up. When refrigerated, herbs can last up to a week.

Wash Them Well

You never know what can be found on fresh produce which is purchased, and that includes herbs. Before eating them or using them in a recipe, be sure to wash them in order to remove any unpleasant things that might be lurking on them.

There is nothing better to cook with than fresh herbs. Any good cook knows that you need fresh basil for pasta sauce, or fresh mint for a delicious mojito. Grocery stores sell fresh herbs, but why go to the store when you can simply grow them at home with a hydroponic garden?

Hydroponic Gardens

Over the last five years, hydroponic gardens have risen in popularity. Basically, a hydroponic garden is a method of growing crops or in this case, herbs without soil. Instead of using soil to plant seeds, you use a specially regulated water-based system. The water is filled with all the nutrients plants need to grow and thrive. There are also special lamps built into the system that give plants the “sunshine” they need to thrive.

Herbs To Consider

If this is your first time using hydroponics, then there are some basic herbs you should consider growing on your countertop. Basil, thyme, mint, rosemary, and sage are all herbs that are commonly used in recipes. You can try growing a batch of one or grow a few different herbs at the same time. This will give you a chance to get to know your hydroponic system, and start growing herbs efficiently.

A good cook should always have a well-stocked herb cupboard. Herbs are essential for engineering interesting flavors, seasoning, brewing teas, and adding subtle notes to everything you cook. While there are so many other aspects that make a good meal, without proper seasoning it can sometimes taste bland. Therefore, here are some household herbs that are always good to have around.

Rosemary

Rosemary goes great with roast potatoes, chicken, and gammon. It adds a particularly autumnal, wintery mood to a dish that will always leave you feeling satisfied.

Chives

Chives can transform average mashed potatoes into a top quality dish. They can really make the difference in your cooking, especially when you’re working with traditional meat dishes.

Italian Mixed Herbs

Italian mixed herbs always go great with cheese, pizzas, pastas, and fresh salads. For instance, you can make your cheese on toast restaurant quality by tossing on some mixed herbs. Or you can make a moody salad with tomato slices, fresh mozzarella, and whichever Italian herbs you’re feeling that day.

Coriander

Coriander always makes the difference. Just a little coriander goes a long way, so you don’t need too much of it. Sprinkle it onto east Asian curries, stir-fries, and noodle dishes for a scrumptious flavor that just hits the spot.

If you love food, then it can be a good idea to get into gardening too. So many delicious flavors can be sourced from your own garden if you only have the resources available. A well-stocked herb garden can mean a happy kitchen. If you’re interested in starting your own homegrown herb garden, here are some good ones to start with.

Thyme

Easy to grow and useful as it doubles up as a bush or hedge, thyme is a solid baseline herb to grow in your garden. Simply pick it fresh and toss it onto baked potatoes, stews, stir fries, omelets, or soups.

Coriander

Another easy one, coriander is delicious on salads, in stir fries, and in soups. The great thing about coriander is that you can grow it inside right on your kitchen windowsill.

Chives

Chives are a nice choice as they are a perennial herb, like thyme. This means that they will be available to you all year round. A good healthy batch of chives can transform your cooking into a tasty paradise.

Mint

Mint is very useful to have in your garden. It is also a perennial, it is easy to look after, and it is extremely versatile. It can be used in cocktails, teas, meat dishes, soups, or even enjoyed on its own for some refreshing flavors.

Herbs and spices are the reason our meals don’t taste dull and bland. Simply adding herbs and spices can transform any regular dish into a masterpiece, and some dishes we know and love won’t even exist without them. But what’s the difference between these two groups?

Herbs and spices are both very important in the cooking world, and it’s not always easy to tell where one group stops and another begins. While there’s some overlapping, herbs are usually defined as leaves of herb plants that are used to add flavor to cooking. These leaves can be fresh or dried, whole, chopped, or ground. Herb plants offer much more than leaves, though, so their other parts are often used to create spices. Spices come from flowers, roots, seeds, and bark of certain plants. While herbs are typically green (or gray-ish if dried), spices come in many different colors, depending on what they’re made of.

Do you have a favorite herb or spice? Have you tried experimenting with less known spices in your kitchen?
