]]>While food and travel are a marriage made in heaven, you shouldn’t overlook the drinks that accompany your favorite dish. With travel restriction easing, we recommend adding wine tasting to your next vacation.
Penny Sadler’s travel and wine blog Adventures of a Carry-On, is a great resource to look into, in this regard. The blog includes Sadler’s first-hand accounts of her travels (anything from picking grapes in Barolo to exploring the Grand Cru vineyards of Alsace), alongside intimate details of tours, wineries, restaurants, and hotels.
A professional makeup artist in her day-to-day, Sadler is a student of the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (an internationally recognized certification) and continually hosts wine tastings for both private and retail customers.
Having traveled to some of the world’s most interesting wine regions, Sadler’s advice is worth your attention. Recent posts include a dive-in into different sorts of wine (in one, Sadler notes that while most people think Prosecco is like champagne, it actually isn’t. “First of all it’s made in Italy, not France,” she notes. “Second, the fermentation method which creates the bubbles is completely different. And those are just a couple of differences.”)
But of course, a good glass of wine is often paired with good company. “The best part of being a travel writer is the people I meet,” Sadler noted in a piece published on Wander With Wonder. “My biggest challenge is staying focused on the task at hand; I’m very curious and easily distracted by sparkly things.”

]]>However, a small part of this wine region is actually located in the Alava province of the neighboring Basque Country, a small slice of the area which arguably has the best to offer of any part of the territory.
This small area of land is located in the far south of Alava and contains some of the best climate conditions and soil for grape-growing in the entire Iberian Peninsula. In fact, the Rioja Alavesa is said to produce the best wines in the entire La Rioja region thanks to its unique climate and its relative proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Rioja Alavesa is cooler than the more southerly parts of the wine-growing region, allowing its wines made primarily from the Tempranillo grape to produce more complex and less acidic flavors than the ones produced farther to the south.
It holds a number of world-class wineries, including the futuristic-looking Bodega Ysios and popular wine producer Marques de Riscal, which is the largest by volume in the region and one of the best-known names in Spanish winemaking.
The next time you’re at the wine store, why not considering picking up a bottle of wine from this region and discovering the great products it has to offer?

Tempranillo is the star red grape of Spain, being the most-cultivated variety in the acclaimed Spanish region of La Rioja. Full-bodied, yet not overwhelming with its tannins or overly dry, this red wine is great both young and aged, and can be paired with a vast variety of foods.
Do you love white wine and are looking to expand your tastebuds? Albariño is the star white grape of the Rias Baixas production region, which makes some of the country’s best whites. This grape produces dry, light, and citrusy wines that pair fantastically with seafood dishes.
Are you a fan of the bubbly? Cava is Spain’s equivalent to France’s Champagne or Italy’s prosecco, a sparkling white wine which is just as fun to drink as it is to mix with fruit juices and other ingredients to make wine cocktails.
