Making popcorn from kernels is easy. You combine oil, salt, and kernels in a pot, place the lid on top, and wait until they finish popping. But let’s say you don’t have a pot or hate cleaning it after. Well, TikTok has the perfect solution for you.

A new trend surfaced on TikTok recently and features users making popcorn in aluminum foil. We know it sounds unusual but most food trends on TikTok do.

One of the most popular videos linked with this trend belongs to @alona_loewen. In a viral clip, which received 47 million views, the TikToker can be seen placing a sheet of aluminum foil on a pan. They then dump a cup of kernels on it and add a stick of butter and a pinch of salt. Another aluminum foil sheet is placed on top and the edges are sealed.

The user then pokes a small hole in the top and heats the aluminum bag of popcorn while shaking it. The kernels soon start popping and quickly fill up the aluminum bag.

Numerous other TikTokers tried the same method and some got positive results while others were disappointed. It appears that the only way to find out is to try it yourself.

Transport your taste buds to the vibrant streets of India with this tantalizing recipe for green lentil dhal, a comforting and nutritious dish that’s bursting with aromatic spices and wholesome flavors. Made with tender green lentils, fragrant spices, and aromatic herbs, this dhal is a perfect balance of richness, warmth, and nourishment. Here’s how you can make it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of green lentils, rinsed and drained
  • 3 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 tin of diced tomatoes
  • 1 tin of coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan or pot, combine the rinsed green lentils and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, partially covered, for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender but still hold their shape. Drain any excess water and set aside.
  2. In the same saucepan, heat the ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chili (if using). Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the garlic becomes fragrant.
  3. Add the cumin seeds to the saucepan and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until they start to sizzle and release their aroma. Stir in the ground turmeric, ground coriander, ground cumin, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for another minute, stirring constantly, to toast the spices.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes to the saucepan, along with any juices from the can. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes break down and form a thick sauce. Pour in the coconut milk and cooked green lentils, stirring to combine all the ingredients. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the dal to thicken slightly.
  5. Taste the dhal and adjust the seasoning with salt, if needed. Once the dhal is cooked to your liking and has reached your desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat.
  6. Serve the flavorful green lentil dhal hot, garnished with freshly chopped cilantro leaves and accompanied by lemon wedges for squeezing over the dal. Enjoy the wholesome goodness and aromatic flavors of this delicious Indian classic, savoring each spoonful as you embrace the rich cultural heritage of Indian cuisine.

TikTok is full of kitchen hacks that don’t seem like they make much sense but actually work out amazingly and change your entire routine. Using a ketchup bottle as a container for cooking oil is definitely one of them.

The idea behind this hack is that standard bottles for vegetable and other cooking oils are prone to spilling and unmeasured application, while ketchup bottles aren’t. Thanks to a sturdy cap and silicone valve on top, nothing gets out of a ketchup bottle unless you decide.

To test this hack, all you need to do is get an empty bottle of ketchup and wash it thoroughly. After it completely dries (you might have to use paper towels to dry out the insides properly), pour the oil of your choosing inside.

Next time you are cooking something, simply take the cap off and squeeze out as much oil as you need. You will find it much easier to pour out the correct amount while you can move around the bottle and store it any way you like without worrying the oil will spill out.

If you need more convincing to test this method out, check out this demonstration video by @joniblackstone.

Scrambled eggs are one of the easiest and most satisfying lunches out there. Eggs are high in protein as well as plenty of beneficial nutrients such as vitamin D and B vitamins. And whipping up scrambled ones to have on toast couldn’t be simpler. Here are some tips to take this easy meal even further.

Use Butter

Try using salted butter instead of vegetable oil to cook your eggs. Eggs are ultimately quite bland, and so they soak up flavors really well. Cooking them in butter will give them a deliciously rich, buttery taste that makes them much more appealing.

Be Careful With Heat

Scrambled eggs ideally want to be cooked on a low and slow heat. If they get too hot then they’ll quickly become dry and leathery which is not at all what you want. You can even take them off the heat a bit before they’re done and let the final cooking take place from their own residual heat.

Add Salt and Pepper at the End

It can be very easy to overdo the seasoning and end up ruining the overall flavor of the eggs. Adding salt and pepper early on also affects their flavor. Leave it to the end and sprinkle a tiny bit in – this will enhance the flavor without being too much.

Step into the vibrant world of Thai cuisine with this homemade pad Thai recipe. Bursting with flavors of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy, pad Thai is a beloved dish that’s both comforting and exotic. With fresh ingredients and simple techniques, making pad Thai at home is a rewarding culinary adventure that’s sure to impress your taste buds and transport you to the streets of Thailand.

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces of rice noodles (pad Thai noodles)
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 2 tablespoons palm sugar or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces of shrimp, chicken, or tofu, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups of bean sprouts
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of chopped roasted peanuts
  • Lime wedges, for serving
  • Optional garnishes: chopped cilantro, sliced red chili, additional peanuts

Instructions:

  1. Cook the rice noodles according to the package instructions until they are tender but still slightly firm (al dente). Drain the noodles and rinse them under cold water to stop the cooking process. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the tamarind paste, fish sauce, and palm sugar until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add the shrimp, chicken, or tofu to the skillet and cook until they are cooked through and slightly golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Push the protein to one side of the skillet and pour the beaten eggs into the empty space. Scramble the eggs until they are cooked through, then mix them with the protein. Add the cooked rice noodles to the skillet along with the prepared tamarind sauce. Toss everything together until the noodles are well coated in the sauce.
  4. Add the bean sprouts and chopped green onions to the skillet and toss to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the bean sprouts are slightly wilted. Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle the chopped roasted peanuts over the pad Thai. Serve it hot, garnished with lime wedges and optional garnishes such as chopped cilantro, sliced red chili, and additional peanuts.

The ability to prepare a nutritious meal is an essential skill we tend to take for granted until we’re out in the world, suddenly responsible for feeding ourselves. Sure, takeout is always an option, but restaurant food is often high in ingredients like oil and salt; not to mention the cost of eating out for every meal will put a dent in your bank account seriously quickly. As intimidating as cooking from scratch may seem, mastering a few simple techniques can make the whole thing feel much less complicated. Read on to learn more about some basic cooking techniques everyone should know.

Precision in Measurement

Accurate measuring can mean the difference between a successful dish and an inedible mess that even the dog won’t touch. Invest in reliable measuring cups and spoons, and stick to measurements as outlined in recipes until you develop an understanding of how ingredients work together. For baking, precision is especially important, so use a digital kitchen scale for dry ingredients like flour and sugar to ensure that your pastries come out perfectly every time.

Mise en Place

A French term that literally translates to “putting in place,” mise en place is the practice of preparing and organizing ingredients before starting to cook. While the specifics will vary depending on the recipe, in general, taking a few extra minutes to chop, peel, and measure everything in advance will allow you to focus on the joy of cooking rather than end up scrambling mid-recipe.

Knife Skills

For mincing, slicing, dicing, and more, knife skills are a fundamental part of preparing ingredients. Different types of knives and techniques can be used for different types of recipes, but getting the hang of some simple techniques and understanding the importance of proper knife safety can go a long way in empowering new cooks to feel comfortable in the kitchen. YouTube is a great resource for finding visual demonstrations.

  4. Scoop dough onto baking sheets, spacing them out. Top with extra M&Ms.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden but centers are soft. Keep a close eye on them. Remember, the secret to soft cookies is pulling them out of the oven just before they look done.
