Cookbooks do more than just list recipes—they serve as cultural artifacts, preserving the flavors and food traditions of their time. Over the years, there are a few cookbooks that have made a significant impact on the way we cook and even think about food. Here’s a look at some of the most iconic collections of all time.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking

When it was first published in 1961, Mastering the Art of French Cooking was revolutionary. With meticulous instructions and a warm, encouraging voice, Julia Child and her co-authors not only taught people how to cook, but also ignited a passion for the culinary arts.

We got accustomed to Oreo surprising us with bold and somewhat unusual flavors. But their latest creation, Space Dunk, is quite something else.

The Space Dunk cookies are filled with two layers of “cosmic cream,” blue and pink, with the taste being described as “marshmallowy flavor.” On top of that, each cookie is packed with popping candies, which Oreo promises will “create a supernova bursting sensation with each bite.”

“The otherworldly cookies also each feature one of five galactic embossments and, for the first time in OREO cookie history, a small cut out in the cookie itself, allowing fans to peer through the cookie and see the colorful crème,” Oreo shares.

Space Dunk flavor, which hit the shelves on January 29, is part of a collaboration with the company Space Perspective, which offers a carbon-neutral spaceflight experience. The collab not only allows Oreo enthusiasts to munch on new and tasteful Oreo variants but could also let them see space up and close.

Oreo and Space Perspective are teaming up to organize Lift Off with OREO sweepstakes, which will send one lucky person to the edge of space. Everyone who buys a package of Oreo cookies and enters its details at LiftOff.OREO.com will take part in the sweepstakes.

After stir-fried stones, aka suodiu, China has brought us another unusual street food trend. This time around, it is grilled ice cubes.

In one of the videos shared on social media, a news reporter can be seen ordering grilled ice cubes from a street vendor. The vendor takes a scoop of ice cubes, places it on the grill, and then brushes it with oil. Next, they add spices and sauces, including chili and cumin, before serving the dish.

According to the news reporter, grilled ice is spicy but has a “wonderful taste.” One portion costs $2.

The origins of this unusual dish remain unknown. The street vendor featured in the video said that it is a popular street food dish in northeastern China, but that has since been debunked.

According to reports from Chinese media outlets, the dish might be a creation of a street food vendor from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. According to one report, the vendor wanted to think of something to help its customers cool down on hot days.

This vendor told the reporters that he originally envisioned grilled ice cubes as a joke, but it became so popular that he couldn’t stop making them. Also, his servings of grilled ice cubes are free.

It makes sense that Kevin Bacon has a famous breakfast recipe, doesn’t it? But it isn’t eggs and bacon, as you might expect. Instead, Bacon’s friends and wife Kyra Sedgwick know him his three-ingredient pancakes.

Bacon shared his pancake story in a recent interview with People.

“Sometimes what I do on Sunday morning when I’m feeling like I need a little power — and usually this happens when my wife, Kyra [Sedgwick], is asleep, so I have to whisper — I make these pancakes that don’t have any flour,” Bacon told the media outlet, revealing that everyone loves them. “The response is good. People are like, ‘Wow, is that a pancake? You don’t have any flour in this at all, huh?'”

Bacon was also kind enough to share his recipe with the rest of the world. According to him, you just need to mix banana, almond butter, and eggs, and you get yourself some pancake butter.

He occasionally adds a bit of cinnamon, but it isn’t mandatory.

“The banana makes it sweet, the almond butter gives you tons of protein, and the egg makes it hold together,” he explained. “They’re absolutely delicious. They’re really, really good for you, but even if they weren’t good for you, I would still make them.”

Bacon’s pancake recipe sure sounds intriguing. We will have to try it out; how about you?

When Eleanor Jenkins moved to a sleepy town, she hoped for a peaceful and unassuming retirement, but it soon became clear that problems weren’t far away. Eleanor never thought she’d need to use her training again—and especially not like this. She could never have predicted the confrontation that was about to unfold.

Even the most unassuming of people have a side that others don’t often see. It takes the toughest of situations to test people and show what they’re really made of.
