Foodies Abroad: When In London, Pop Into Pophams Bakery

As traveling restrictions ease around the world, we return to some of our favorite hot spots. When it comes to food and dining experiences, London is right at the top. Following the latest easing of coronavirus restrictions in London, indoor areas at hospitality venues can reopen and Londoners (as well as tourists) have flocked their favorite pubs, bars, and cafes.

If you’re visiting London and looking for a local treat, we recommend Pophams Bakery. Launched in October 2017, it’s described as a small bakery filled with heart and passion. Amongst its more popular dishes, it offers mouthwatering delights such as ham and cheese croissants and loquat and amaretto custards.

The name Pophams originates from the street they are just situated off, Popham Street, though the bakery now has two locations – in both Islington and Hackney (click here for more details).

The small bakery continuously evolved from their very first Bacon and Maple to their lunch and weekend menus. It is known for continuously trying out new flavor combinations and techniques, offering exciting combinations for a growing audience.

“We aim to be a perfect haven for locals of Islington but also the ultimate destination for our beautifully unique pastries,” said founding director Ollie Gold, in an interview with Elysia Catering’s blog. “There is a great sense of community around us and we love being at the heart of it.”

“The difference between an authentic handmade pastry and an industrially produced one is passion,” says Gold. “When you eat a good handmade pastry, you can feel all the passion, hard work, and the selected ingredients through it’s rich flavor. The time it takes depends on the kind of pastry and its complexity, but it can take from a few hours to an overnight process. We prepare our croissant dough the day before and giving its final touch the next morning (18-20 hours later).”
