Dive into the world of Tex-Mex cuisine with this easy white queso recipe. Perfect for parties, game nights, or a cozy night in, this melted cheese dip is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. With just a handful of ingredients and minimal prep time, you can whip up this delicious dip in no time.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. white American cheese, cubed or shredded
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1 (4 oz.) can diced green chiles, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons canned jalapeños, chopped (optional for extra heat)
  • 1 small tomato, finely diced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the white American cheese and half-and-half. Stir continuously to prevent the cheese from sticking.
  2. Once the cheese has mostly melted, stir in the diced green chiles and jalapeños (if using). Continue to cook and stir until the cheese is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt to the queso. Stir well.
  4. Just before serving, fold in the diced tomato and cilantro.
  5. Transfer your white queso to a serving bowl or a small slow cooker set on warm to keep it perfectly melty.

Believe it or not, while most of us associate it with another country entirely, Tex-Mex cuisine is one of the hallmarks of the American culinary tradition. Taking ideas and ingredients from south of the border and adapting it to the tastes of the United States, there are a number of creations that are integral to the country’s culinary identity. Here are three Tex-Mex classics that help define the country’s food.

Chili con Carne

Chili con carne is one of the most popular foods you’ll find anywhere in the United States. Made by moms in kitchens who have never stepped foot in Mexico in their lives, this combination of spices, red tomatoes, beans, and meat is a comfort food like no other.

Nachos

The actual tortilla chips which serve as the base for nachos find their origins in Mexican corn tortillas, but this dish has definitely been altered and adapted over the years. You’ll find all kinds of recipes with melted spicy cheese or other toppings like beans or guacamole.

Fajitas

One of the most popular dishes you will find on the menus at Tex-Mex restaurants are, without a doubt, fajitas. Made with strips of meat that are served piping hot and grilled along with vegetables and served with tortillas and toppings, this is an example of a Mexican dish that has been adapted to American tastes brilliantly.
