Sushi is one of those amazing foods that is both a restaurant favorite and actually possible to make at home. But one of the things that most intimidates people who have never made sushi before is the idea of rolling their own sushi without everything falling apart. If you follow these tips, you should be able to do it with no problem!

Get the Bamboo Mat

You may have read online that you can roll sushi with a tea towel, which is true, but it will make things much harder on you than just springing for a bamboo mat. They’re really affordable and they’re easy to store, so there’s pretty much no excuse not to get this specialized tool even if you just want to make sushi once.

Use Water

One of the things that makes rolling sushi messy is that sticky rice which really does stick to everything. To avoid this as much as you can, keep a bowl of water nearby and wet your fingertips often so you don’t get rice stuck to you.

Start Small

Like with burritos, people tend to overfill their sushi rolls which pretty much inevitably leads to overspill and mess, discouraging the person from continuing. So for your first roll, start with a thin layer of rice and don’t overstuff. You can always add more in subsequent rolls.
