Not too many people know about ground flaxseed, and it isn’t exactly considered by most to be a pantry essential like flour or baking soda. And that’s a shame. In reality, ground flaxseed is exactly the kind of thing you always want to keep around. Here’s why.

It’s Super Healthy

Flaxseed is so good for you that Michael Greger, author of the book How Not to Die and website nutritionfacts.org, recommends getting a serving of it in every day. Full of omega-3 fatty acids and the polyphenol lignan, flaxseed has been shown in studies to have numerous health benefits including controlling cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood sugar levels, reducing inflammation, and treating constipation.

You Can Make Eggs With It

Ground flaxseed is more than just seed powder. You can actually use it to cook with. It’s a popular plant-based substitute for eggs in vegan baking recipes. All you have to do is mix one tablespoon of flaxseed meal with two and a half tablespoons of water to make something with the exact texture and consistency of an egg.

It’s Easy to Eat

Even if you don’t use it to bake, it’s easy to get ground flaxseed into your daily diet if you keep it in your pantry. Just sprinkle a spoonful into your soups or stews or over your salads. You won’t even taste it, but you will get all of the amazing health benefits.
