Waffles are so versatile, it’s hard to get bored of them. Depending on the topping, waffles can make a great breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Here are a few creative sweet and savory toppings to have instead of syrup the next time you’re having waffles.
Peaches and Honey
If you want to have your waffles sweet but still healthy, top them with some fresh peach slices, and drizzle over pure honey. The flavors of tangy peach and smooth sweet honey truly compliment each other. You could also add some strawberries or blackberries.
Bacon and Avocado
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best ones. If you want to go savory with your waffles try bacon and avocado. Mash avocado in a bowl with a fork until you achieve your desired consistency. Add lemon, and some salt and pepper. Then, cook the bacon until brown and crispy for about 6-8 minutes. Spread the mashed avocado on the waffle, and top it with the bacon and some grated cheese of your choice. Place the sandwich in the waffle iron, close gently, and cook until golden brown and the cheese has just melted; about 3-4 minutes.
Grilled Figs and Goats Cheese
To make this sophisticated waffle serving, halve a few ripe figs and sprinkle the cut surface with demerara sugar. Cook on medium grill until bubbling and softened. Meanwhile, whisk 6 tablespoons of goat’s cheese with 2 tablespoons of soft cheese, 1 tablespoon milk, and a few thyme leaves. Season with a little salt. Finally, spoon a little cheese on each warm waffle, sit the figs on top, and drizzle with runny honey.
