Winter is officially underway and many of us can probably tell from our chesty coughs and sniveling noses. Colds can be debilitating and frustrating, but luckily, you can alleviate their symptoms by eating the right foods and drinking the right drinks. Here are five of the top foods to consume when you have a cold.

Ginger

Ginger is a great food to eat when you’re sick. It alleviates nausea, unblocks the nose, and boosts the immune system. You can infuse ginger with tea, sprinkle it on your oats, or cook it into a curry.

Mustard

Mustard is good at clearing the sinuses and regulating your nose’s inner flow. You can use it as a marinade, in sandwiches or as a sauce.

Tea

Ordinary hot breakfast tea is effective at decongesting the nose, soothing a sore throat, and reducing a cough. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help stave off illnesses.

Honey

Perfect on cereal, drizzled in tea, or eaten with yogurt, honey is a wonderful way to combat colds. It has anti-bacterial effects and stimulates the immune system as well.

Avocados

The magic of avocados is that they provide you with crucial nutrients but are also easy to eat. Ideal when you’re sick, cut them regularly or mash them up into some tasty guacamole!
