Cooking meat over fire is a tradition found in many cultures, and the US is no exception. The Southern states in particular are associated with their long-standing barbecue culture. As straightforward as it may seem, the way the meat is prepared does vary from place to place. Here are a few distinct barbecue traditions and their defining characteristics.

Memphis

Barbecue in Memphis primarily refers to pork. The city is known for its ribs, which can be divided into “dry” and “wet” versions. Wet ribs are basted in a tomato-based sauce before, during, and after cooking, while dry-rubbed ribs are covered with a blend of spices and herbs, smoked, and served with sauce on the side.

Texas

Texas barbecue is all about beef, but it’s perhaps most famous for brisket smoked over oak and served without sauce, either in slices or on a sandwich. In South Texas, you’ll find more mesquite-smoked barbecue, and the Eastern part of the state is known for its chopped pork and beef sandwich.

Kansas City

In Kansas City, you’ll find melded traditions from the Carolinas, Memphis, and Texas. But it is also the birthplace of one special barbecue dish: the burnt ends. Those are the point ends of the brisket that have been double smoked, yielding a caramelized crisp exterior and richly flavored interior.

If you know Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa cookbooks you know that they feature dozens of incredible pasta recipes. But does she have a personal favorite? When asked this very question during a recent Q&A session, Garten revealed that she does, in fact, have a favorite and it’s the summer garden pasta.

“What you do is take a lot of cherry tomatoes and toss them with olive oil and let them marinate for four hours. Cook some capellini and throw it in there,” she said. “It’s really easy, and a great summer and fall pasta dish.”

All you need for Garten’s summer pasta is parmesan cheese, cherry tomatoes, minced garlic, and basil leaves. Indeed, the recipe requires so few ingredients it’s bursting with fresh flavors. Prep the garlic and basil and throw them in a bowl with your tomatoes, olive oil, and seasoning. Then cover the bowl and let it sit on the counter for about four hours. Once it’s ready, just cook the pasta and combine. Add some more cheese and basil on top and there you have it!

Once you introduce an air fryer to your kitchen, you best believe it will turn into one of your most frequently used devices. This device can expertly cook anything from Brussel sprouts to pancakes at the push of a few buttons. But while this appliance is so easy to use, cleaning it can seem daunting at first. However, maintaining your air fryer is important if you want optimal cooking results. Here’s how to tackle this task in the simplest way possible.

Tips for Cleaning an Air Fryer

  1. Don’t submerge the unit in water. This will damage the electronics and is likely to ruin your air fryer.
  2. Use a damp cloth to clean the metal parts. Scouring pads or abrasive sponges can damage the non-stick coating.
  3. If you notice foul odor coming out of your air fryer, you can put half a lemon in the basket and let it sit for about 30 minutes before cleaning.

How Often Should I Clean the Air Fryer?

The short answer is after each use. Each time you use the air fryer, wash the basket, tray, and pan with soap and warm water. Then quickly clean the interior using a damp cloth. Assemble it after all the parts have dried.

Garlic planting season begins in October, and you could easily grow your own garlic and save yourself quite a few last-minute trips to the grocery store. Don’t worry if you’re not a seasoned gardener: garlic is a very low-maintenance crop that rarely needs water or fertilizing. Below you’ll find a few tips on choosing your garlic variety and planting it.

Which Garlic Should I Purchase?

Firstly, look out for garlic that is organic and is specifically sold as seeds for planting. Reaching out to a local organic farmer is a great option. There are several garlic varieties that are broken up into two categories: Hardneck and Softneck.

The “neck” refers to the stock that grows upward from the garlic bulb. Hardnecks are hardy, as their name suggests, making them suitable for regions with colder winters. Softnecks thrive in mild winters and it is the type of garlic you’ll find in most supermarkets. Out of the two, hardnecks have a sharper and more complex flavor.

Planting Tips

Make sure to plant the garlic 10 to 14 days before the ground freezes, and choose a sunny spot. Before planting, break up garlic heads into individual cloves, leave the paper wrapper on each clove. Plant the cloves four-inch deep, wide side down, and pointy tip-up. Come spring, you will see green tips budding from the ground.

Shared by user Rebecca Huffman, the idea is to store any left-over paste in the can in a small freezer bag, score the bag into sections, and freeze it. Then, whenever you need tomato paste for another recipe, you simply break off a piece of the frozen tomato paste and return the remainder to the freezer. That way, that little can is more than just single-use and the leftovers don’t go to waste.

This storage tip can be applied to any other paste or sauce left-over, that you might want to utilize in the future. The simple idea resonated with many of the video’s viewers receiving comments like “I’ve wasted so much food that I could have done this the whole time.” Sometimes, being creative in the kitchen is essential to being frugal!

Have you ever used dandelions in cooking? Yes, the entire plant is edible, from the root to the leaves. It used to be considered, and still is by many, as a herb. Dandelion greens are high in iron, calcium, vitamins A, C, and B12 among other vitamins and minerals. On tip of that, they contain more protein and iron than spinach! Here are just a few of the ways you can incorporate these rich, nutritious greens in the kitchen.

Raw

Dandelion greens are bitter in flavor, but a nice citrusy vinaigrette will do the trick to balance the bitterness in a raw dandelion greens salad. You could also throw dandelion greens into a soup the way you would kale or char. Dandelion works best in bean-based soups like lentils.

With Eggs

An easy way of incorporating dandelion greens into your breakfast would be adding them to an omelet, frittata, or quiche. Try substituting spinach for dandelion next time you’re making quick eggs. Throw in melted cheese and some vegetables too, and you got yourself a whole hearty meal.

Sauteed or Braised

Sauteing and braising are easy and delicious ways to cook dandelion greens. Add in olive oil and garlic, or, if you want to take it one step further, aff pancetta or bacon and braised the greens in a little chicken stock.

It’s getting clearer and clearer: an air fryer is one of the best kitchen appliances ever invented. According to the food blogger behind Little Sunny Kitchen, not only do air frying hot dogs save you the hassle of boiling and grilling them, but it also results in the most delicious hot dogs you can imagine.

All it takes is tossing the hot dogs in the air fryer for five to six minutes. Yes, it’s that easy. You can use the air fryer for toasting the buns too. When heated in a toaster or oven, the buns have a tendency to break or cook unevenly, but that problem does not occur with the air fryer. Throw them in for two minutes and you’ll have crunchy, toasty buns.

To take it to the next level, you can also make pigs in blankets in the air fryer. Take a regular-sized hot dog and cut it in half, then roll the two halves in the pastry and brush them with an egg wash. Cook them at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for about eight minutes until the puff pastry is golden, and they’re ready to eat.

Sparkling water is surging in popularity lately. One of the reasons for this boom is that many consumers are turning to sparkling water as a sugar-free alternative to carbonated sodas. But is it actually as good for us as we think it is? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of sparkling water.

What Exactly is Sparkling Water?

Sparkling water is plain water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas which makes it bubbly. Some sparkling water, like Pellegrino for example, are naturally sparkling mineral waters from mineral springs in France and Italy.

Is Carbonated Water Good For Us?

If the sparkling water doesn’t contain any added sugar or artificial flavoring and sweeteners, drinking it is as hydrating as drinking still water. One of the main concerns some people have about drinking sparkling water is that it could harm the enamel of our teeth. The truth is, sparkling water is only slightly harsher on our teeth than plain water and much less harmful than soft drinks. Other benefits of this drink are that it can relieve symptoms of indigestion and constipation, and it can enhance the feeling of fullness after a meal, thus aiding with weight loss.
