Ketchup is one of those condiments that people never think about making. Why go through all the hustle when it’s fairly cheap and easily available? Well, we have one reason that might be enough to make you think twice about the idea of homemade ketchup—it’s much tastier than the store-bought version.

Now, we’ll be honest with you. Making your own ketchup is pretty straightforward, but it can be a bit time-consuming. However, it will definitely be worth it. So, if you are game, check out the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 6 pounds tomatoes
  • 1/3 pounds red bell pepper
  • 1 cup chopped apples
  • 3 red onions
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • ½ tablespoons mustard
  • ½ tablespoons salt

Instructions:

  1. Slice the tomatoes, bell pepper, and onions into larger chunks. Combine with apples, sugar, vinegar, mustard, and salt in a larger pot.
  2. Cook on medium heat for two hours. Mix often to avoid ingredients stick to the bottom of the pot.
  3. After two hours, take a stick blender and mash the mixture. Leave on for another half an hour while continuing to mix from time to time. You can cook longer depending on the consistency you want to achieve.
  4. Leave the ketchup to cool off and then strain it into glass bottles. Seal it and leave it in the fridge to be enjoyed anytime.
