If you love making ramen at home but don’t care to buy specific noodles every time, this hack is for you. With just one unusual ingredient, you can turn your regular store-bought pasta into ideal noodles for ramen. The ingredient is baking soda, and all you have to do is add it to your water before the pasta goes in.

The reason why this hack works is because it firms up the noodles a bit more than regular water and salt would, making it have a bite that resembles more of a ramen noodle. The baking soda acts as an agent similar to the solution called kansui that is normally used to make ramen noodles.

In order to make the noodles, all you have to do is add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to every quart of water you use. To make one pound of spaghetti or any other pasta similar to that, use between 1-2 quarts of water to cook. Bring the water to a boil, and then drop in the pasta as well as the baking soda at the same time. Cook the pasta for about 1-2 minutes longer than the box says and you will turn out having amazing ramen-esque noodles!
