Southern Style Fried Okra

Fried okra is a classic southern dish that you can find in just about any traditional restaurant in the south. Okra was brought to the south originally from Africa.Okra is super versatile and it goes really well with just about anything. It can be used as a crunchy element in a salad, or as a classic side dish alongside dirty rice or mashed potatoes.

Instructions

  1. Wash and cut 10 pods of okra into pieces. Each piece should be about one inch long.
  2. Mix one egg and let the okra sit in it for about 5-10 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup of cornmeal with a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  4. Dredge the okra in the cornmeal mixture thoroughly so each piece is completely covered.
  5. Pan fry the okras until they become golden brown.
  6. Drain the okra and pat the excess oil off with a paper towel.
  7. Enjoy!
