The Simplest Way to Get a Bartender’s Attention Without Making Them Hate You

It’s another Saturday night and your favorite bar is crowded while all you want to do is order a drink and go back to your table. While there are definitely ways to get the bartender’s attention in a matter of seconds, not all of them are polite and socially acceptable. Have you been doing it the wrong way all this time? Keep reading to find out.

As it turns out, there is one right and many wrong ways to call for the bartender’s attention when you want to order a drink. While you may be tempted to call him out loud, to keep sighing, or to take some cash to wave with, what you need to do instead is make eye contact. It’s that simple.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler, a bartender and author of the book Drinking Distilled, wrote something similar in his book. “When you approach the bar to order a drink, pick a location and wait patiently. That’s all you have to do! The bartender knows exactly who is next and will be with you as soon as they can.”

He notes that nobody will get a drink any quicker if they wave their hands, shake money in the bartender’s face, or try to order from the barback.

A bar is a place where you go to relax and have fun, so let the staff do the job they were trained to do.
