Pomegranates are a delicious fruit but they can be notoriously hard to peel. Not only do they have a hard shell, but the seeds can splatter and stain your clothes. You might be thinking that it’s just not worth it. But here are some tips for streamlining your pomegranate peeling process.

Start by cutting off the crown of the pomegranate (the top with the flower-like shape) with a sharp knife. This exposes the seeds inside.

Next, score the pomegranate. Make shallow cuts from top to bottom, following the natural ridges on the fruit. Make 4-6 evenly spaced cuts around the pomegranate.

Fill a large bowl with water. Submerge the pomegranate in the water, and gently pull apart the sections.

While submerged, use your fingers to separate the seeds from the pith, the spongy white part of the fruit. The seeds will sink to the bottom of the bowl, while the pith will float to the surface.

Finally, use a strainer to scoop out the seeds from the bottom of the bowl.

The benefit of doing it in water is that you’ll avoid the seed squirting pomegranate juice on you and you can move much faster. Enjoy!
