Are You Storing Cheese Correctly? Here are Storage Mistakes to Avoid

Who doesn’t love cheese? Cheese can be eaten by the slice, in sandwiches, in chili, on salads, on eggs—pretty much in every meal. But, how about storing cheese? For most of us, it takes a couple of days to finish a block of cheese and to keep it fresh, avoid these common cheese storage mistakes.

Leaving Cheese in Plastic

Once you break the seal and start slicing, the vacuum sealing isn’t ideal for storing and there’s an increased risk for mold and oxidation. Instead, use cheese paper or wrap it in wax or parchment paper then put it in a partially sealed bag.

Storing Cheese in the Wrong Part of the Refrigerator

To ensure the quality of cheese, it needs to be kept in a consistent temperature. Avoid storing cheese in a refrigerator door or towards the front of shelves. Wrapped cheeses should be stored in the cheese drawer or vegetable crisper.

Storing All Cheese the Same

How you store cheese depends on the type. Hard cheese like Parmesan should be wrapped tightly in paper and then loosely wrapped in plastic while semi-hard to semi-soft cheeses like cheddar, gouda, and Swiss should be wrapped loosely in paper and then loosely in plastic wrap.

Putting Cheese in the Freezer

It may be safe to freeze cheese, but it impacts the texture. Cheese is best frozen if it’s being used as an ingredient in a recipe.
