Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! The U.S. celebrated National Rum Day just recently (August 16, to be precise), and it’s a great opportunity to share some rum cooking hacks. So, here are some creative ways to cook like a pirate.
Rum-Glazed Ham
Up your holiday ham with a glaze made from brown sugar, dark rum, and a hint of Dijon mustard. As the ham bakes, the rum caramelizes, creating a rich sweet-savory topping. Yum!
Rum-Infused Desserts
Desserts are where rum really shines. Think rum-soaked cakes, like the classic rum baba or a Caribbean-style rum cake. You can also add a splash of rum to whipped cream, custards, or even your morning pancakes for a twist.
Savory Rum Marinades
Who said rum is just for sweets? You can (and should) use it in savory dishes, too. Combine rum with soy sauce, garlic, and lime juice to make a delicious marinade for grilled meats or seafood. The rum softens the meat, plus, it adds that just-right sweetness.
