Soup is a winter staple and on a chilly, snowy day, there’s nothing more enjoyable than a bowl of warm soup. They’re so much more comforting than sides, and with the right additions, they can make great entrees. With these tips, you can make your soups even better.
Use Bones
While we usually use stocks and broth, bones make for a richer more concentrated soup. Save your chicken and meat bones and rinse them before tossing them in a pot full of water and cooking them on low heat for 12 to 48 hours.
Brown Ingredients
Before putting them into the pot, roast your meat and vegetables to release their flavors. Roasting vegetables carmelizes them, which makes them sweeter and tastier.
Add Acid
Acids like citrus juices, tomato paste, wine, coffee, beer, or vinegars will give your soup an edge.
Include Seasonings
Don’t be afraid to go heavy on the spices, herbs, and other seasonings. Parsley, basil, thyme, garlic, oregano, onion powder, cilantro, salt, and pepper enhance the flavor of the other ingredients in your soup. Chili powder, cayenne pepper, or smoky paprika can add some kick to the soup as well.
Add Starch
Noodles, dumplings, matzo balls, and rice make soups feel more like a meal and so much more delicious.
