Similar to Pizza, Calzones have been first made in Naples, Italy. The difference between pizza and calzones is just the shape of it – the way it is folded. Calzones will always come in the form of a half moon or half circle. The fillings will mostly be the same; tomato pizza sauce and cheese such as mozzarella cheese and ricotta.

Calzones recipes mainly vary in terms of what fillings are used. If you already had a calzone, you can certainly differentiate between a frozen one or a freshly homemade. A world apart.

Have a look at how to make calzones in a healthier and lower calories version, but as tasty as the regular one. In this case, we are going to use sweet potato instead of wheat flour for the dough. The fillings remain the same.

Serves 4.

Ingredients:
* 1 cup of boiled sweet potato, mashed
* 1 cup cassava flour
* ½ cup arrowroot starch
* 2 eggs
* ½ cup avocado or olive oil
* 1 tsp oregano
* 1 tsp salt
For the fillings:
* 6 tbsp pizza sauce
* 6 mozzarella medallions
* 6 fresh basil leaves

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. In a large bowl, mix the sweet potato, flour, starch, eggs, oil and salt until well-combined.
3. Knead the dough with your hands until it is pliable like pizza dough.
4. Lay parchment paper on a flat surface and sprinkle some starch. Flatten half the amount of dough with a rolling pin, roughly a 5” circle.
5. Transfer the dough to a baking sheet; fill one side of dough with mozzarella, basil leaves and pizza sauce.
6. Fold other side of dough to cover the toppings; this should look like a half moon.
7. Fold the bottom into the top to create a lip enclosing the fillings completely.
8. Repeat steps 3–6 for the remaining dough.
9. Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.
