The Spanish region of Galicia is one of the best places to eat in Europe, with a bevy of natural products like seafood, meat, grapes, and vegetables providing a long list of top-tier raw material that the area turns into gastronomic delights.

Filloas are one of the most popular of these Galician treats, and the month of February is the traditional time to sample them if you are lucky enough to be in Galicia or in a place where they can be found.

Like a Crepe

Have you ever tried a crepe before? If so, you already have an idea of what a filloa is like. Milk, eggs, flour, and sugar are the main ingredients that are used for the batter of this special treat. Some Galician chefs also add anise or cinnamon to their filloas to give them an extra bit of flavor.

How They’re Made

These sweet treats are then spread thin on a hot surface, traditionally a griddle, and cooked on both sides until they are golden-brown. Traditional Galician toppings for filloas include honey (the region is known for producing fantastic honey), powdered sugar, and even a cinnamon-sugar mix. Nowadays, although it isn’t necessarily traditional, Nutella, melted chocolate, and even cream can even be put inside of them.

Is your mouth watering yet? Be sure to give filloas a try if you get a chance.
