Breading makes any food instantly tastier, but what happens when you’ve planned on having fried chicken or meatballs and you realize that you’re out of breadcrumbs? Well, it’s actually not the end of the world and if anything, it’s a chance to get creative and try something new that you may even end up liking better. Here are some substitutes to swap out for breadcrumbs.

Cereal

Cornflakes, corn or rice Chex, and Wheaties are great substitutes as they’re not too sweet and they have a similar texture to breadcrumbs. Just crush them for a smoother coating and enjoy the crunch cereal offers to dishes.

Pretzels

Pretzels bring a nice saltiness and crunch to whatever you’re baking and you can use them as a coating by crushing them into tiny pieces or as a binding agent by processing them until they’re fine.

Nuts and Seeds

Use your favorite nuts or seeds as a crunchy coating on a fish fillet or chicken breast.

Potato Chips

Potato chips work well as an alternative because they’re already seasoned and you can choose between classic ones, sour cream and onion, or barbecue.

Crackers

Crushed Saltines work well as a binding agent for meatballs or meatloaf and if you want a slightly sweater flavor opt for Ritz.
