Schnitzel
There are debates over whether this famous food comes from Germany or Austria, but even if we can’t agree on its origins, everyone will accept that it is delicious. This simple chicken recipe can be adapted to use other meats, or even vegetables such as eggplant, in place of the chicken.
Ingredients:
- 4 chicken breasts
- ½ cup of breadcrumbs
- Dried oregano
- ½ cup of milk
- 2 eggs
- 1/8 cup of butter
- 2 cloves of garlic, finely sliced
- Oil
Instructions:
Sear the chicken in a hot pan, until the skin is browned on all sides. Remove and allow to rest for ten minutes. Fry the garlic in the butter until it is beginning to brown, then remove from the heat. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs into the milk, then add the garlic butter and dried oregano. Dip the chicken breasts in the batter, before rolling them in breadcrumbs. Fry in oil until golden brown on all sides, check that the chicken is cooked through before serving.
Cucumber Salad
Not just a cuisine of rich dishes and meats, Germany also does salads very well. This cucumber salad would go well with the schnitzel above, or as part of a big spread.
Ingredients:
- 1 cucumber
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup of soured cream
- 3 finely sliced garlic cloves
- 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
- A handful of fresh dill, finely chopped
Instructions:
Finely slice the cucumber, then add to a bowl along with the other ingredients. Chill until ready to serve.
