Let’s be honest, most of us don’t have a chance to give much thought to the whole “how to properly store cheese?” thing. We usually eat it so fast that it doesn’t have time to get spoiled. But let’s say that you are not a big cheese aficionado, or you just bought a huge block that will be around for a while. In that case, you definitely want to know the proper methods for storing cheese.

Most food experts recommend that you store cheese in the refrigerator while following several rules. Before placing the cheese into the fridge, you should double-wrap it in waxed paper or parchment paper and place it in an air-tight container lined with a damp towel. Also, keep it in the compartment for vegetables and fruit or on the top shelf, as the temperatures are the most constant here.

However, if you really want to make sure your cheese will stay fresh for longer, you can also apply one sweet trick.

According to cheese expert Patricia Michelson, one of the best ways to store cheese is to add a few sugar cubes to the container you are keeping it in. Michelson claims that the sugar cubes will regulate the atmosphere inside the container and attract excess moisture, preventing the cheese from getting moldy.

The one thing you should keep in mind is that the sugar cubes will start melting at one point, so make sure to swap them out regularly.
