Ice cream can be a big thing that vegans miss when they give up dairy products. This vegan ice cream recipe will help you use up your leftover bananas whilst also producing a delicious and healthy ice cream. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of oat milk
  • Optional toppings such as chopped hazelnuts, dairy-free chocolate chips or shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop your bananas into small coins. Put your banana coins into a sealed bag and put in the freezer for 2-3 hours. At this point they should be solid.
  2. Once your bananas are ready, put them in a food processor or bowl with a hand blender and add your vanilla extract and oat milk.
  3. Blend your bananas until they create a creamy and smooth texture. Make sure to get all the bits of banana down the side of your food processor or bowl. If your result is too thick, you can add more milk.
  4. You can either serve it immediately or refreeze it if you want a more solid ice cream. Enjoy topped with nuts or chocolate chips.

Many nutritionists and dietitians will be the first to tell you that you shouldn’t completely go cold turkey. Some of the best experts will try to help you maintain your favorite foods whilst also striving towards a healthier overall intake. Ice cream, for example, is one of the hardest things to give up. So if you don’t want to say goodbye to ice cream completely, how often should you be allowed to eat it?

Frequency

Ultimately, there really is to one right answer, because everyone is different. However, if ice cream is really “your thing”, then you can go for it about once a week. Set aside a day each week as your “ice cream day” where you get to indulge in your favorite flavor, your favorite cone, your favorite topping, the whole works!

Portion Control

However, this also brings us to our next point: portion control. It really does depend how much you’re eating per sitting. If you’re only grabbing a couple bites at a time in passing, you can probably do it a few times throughout the week. But if you’re engaging in an all-out ice cream extravaganza, then maybe even once a week might be too much. One scoop or two scoops of ice cream a week seems to be the golden ratio, though.

Ice cream might be one of the most beloved desserts throughout the entire world, but that doesn’t mean they’re all created equally. Certain brands are tastier than others, and certain flavors are more superior too. So for the sake of a good old fashioned top three ranking, we’re here to present the three greatest ice brands in the entire world.

Häagen-Dazs

We figured we’d kick things off with none other than the classiest ice brand on the planet: Häagen-Dazs. There’s something about tasting this delicious ice cream that just feels “right”. They don’t overwhelm you with crazy flavors—simplicity works for them, because the quality is just that good.

Baskin Robbins

On the other side of the spectrum, Baskin Robbins is known for having a wide variety of flavors (heck, “31 Flavors” is part of their name!). However, don’t take that as a sign that their ice cream quality is any less good. In fact, Baskin Robbins has both quantity and quality, making it truly one of the biggest ice cream outposts in the entire world.

Carvel

Carvel has a bit of a cult following on the east coast, and there’s a reason it’s still around to this day. Known for its bold flavors such as “birthday cake”, there are certain things you’ll find at Carvel that you won’t find at your typical ice cream store.

Ice cream and gelato are both delicious frozen desserts and you may be wondering—is there really a difference? Is gelato just a fancy word for ice cream? Well, you’ll be surprised to learn there are several key differences, both on the ingredient side and in the way the desserts are prepared and served.

Ingredients

Ice Cream includes more egg yolks, which add richness and help stabilize the mixture. Ice cream also has more sugar mixed in. Gelato, on the other hand, uses more milk than cream and fewer egg yolks. Because of the difference in ingredients, gelato usually contains less fat than a typical ice cream.

Mixing Process

Both desserts are mixed or “churned” to be more specific, but ice cream is churned at a fast speed, which incorporates more air and creates a lighter texture. Gelato on the other hand is churned slowly, keeping the final product dense and rich.

Serving Temperature

Finally, there are different standards for what temperature to serve the desserts at. Ice cream is typically served at around -20 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it very firm. Gelato is usually served at a slightly warmer temperature, around 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, giving it a softer consistency.

Ever since Stranger Things introduced the ice cream parlor Scoops Ahoy in Season 3, we’ve always wondered what sweet treats from this shop would taste like. Netflix finally decided to help us solve this puzzle and joined forces with Walmart for an ice cream collection that will take you straight to the Upside Down.

Scoops Ahoy was first featured in the third season of the beloved sci-fi series, and it served as the workplace for Steve Harrington or Robin Buckley within the Starcourt Mall. The adventure later took them outside this nautical-themed ice cream parlor, but Scoops Ahoy stayed an important part of the Stranger Things lore.

Each spoonful of Scoops Ahoy ice cream is packed with flavors and textures that will whisk you away to the heart of Hawkins, Indiana. Netflix and Walmart prepared a wide variety of different flavor combos, all tied to episodes, themes, and characters from the world of Stranger Things.

The list of flavors inspired by the show includes U.S.S. Butterscotch, Cinnamon Bun Bytes, Chocolate Pudding, and vanilla and butter ice cream Triple Decker. Netflix and Walmart also joined forces for three additional flavors inspired by the spooky alternate dimension the Upside Down – Mint Flare, Pineapple Upside, and the black vanilla ice cream The Void.

You will often hear people use the words ice cream and gelato interchangeably for everyone’s favorite summer treat. But despite looking and tasting similar, they are actually not the same. Continue reading to find out some key differences between ice cream and gelato.

They Are Made in a Different Way

Ice cream and gelato use similar ingredients, but the way they are made is different. Ice cream uses less milk and has a higher content of cream and eggs. Gelato has more milk, and some varieties don’t use eggs at all. Another big difference is that gelato is churned at a much slower rate than ice cream.

They Have Different Consistency

Due to the slower churning rate, gelato is denser but has softer consistency. Ice cream, on the other hand, is creamy and smooth.

They Are Served at Different Temperatures

Gelato is usually served at a warmer temperature than ice cream. This makes it easier to scoop, and gelato doesn’t shock your tongue with the cold in a way ice cream does.

They Have a Different Flavor

Gelato usually has a more intense flavor due. This is partially due to the more prominent use of natural ingredients and partially thanks to its warmer temperature that allows our taste buds to be more receptive toward flavor.

Just when we thought that all the possible flavors of ice cream were already invented, one company came up with something revolutionary. New York-based ice creamery Van Leeuwen revealed a new product made in collaboration with Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. That’s right, they made mac & cheese ice cream. Would you try it?

“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream,” Kraft’s Senior Associate Brand Manager Emily Violett said in a press release. “That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with.” She also mentioned that the new ice cream contains high-quality ingredients and no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes.

It’s clear that this isn’t a treat for everyone. After all, ice cream is a dessert and not many people can imagine eating a savory version of it. Will other companies follow with different savory flavors soon? Only time will tell. For now, we recommend you try it if you have a chance, at least for the sake of having something interesting to tell your friends. It may be surprisingly good!

It’s one thing to buy vanilla ice cream at the ice cream parlor, but the truth is that you can make delicious homemade vanilla ice cream in minutes at home as well. You can use this as a base for loads of great desserts and wow your friends with your dessert skill. Here’s how to do it!

Ingredients and Equipment

To make delicious vanilla ice cream, you need two vanilla pods, four egg yolks, 100 grams of caster sugar, 200 milliliters of whole milk, 300 milliliters of double cream, and an ice cream maker. It’s a good idea to invest in an ice cream machine as it will produce tons of top-quality ice cream for you.

Gently Heat the Cream

The first thing you need to do is create the cream base for the ice cream. This begins the vanilla infusion and makes sure the ice cream is saturated with its soft taste.

Gently heat the milk and the cream in a saucepan with the vanilla pods. Heat the mixture until steaming but not boiling. Leave it for five minutes so that the vanilla infuses into the cream.

Thicken the Mixture

Next, whisk the sugar and egg yolks together until it has a foamy consistency. Remove the vanilla pods and slowly whisk the warm cream into the sugary yolk mixture. Return to saucepan and cook until it becomes thick and gloopy. Stir continuously.

Leave to Form

Pop the cream mixture into your ice cream maker and leave to churn. When you’re ready to serve it, scoop the fully formed ice cream out and enjoy!

Now that summer’s here, it’s time to start eating ice cream. While we eat the frozen treat year round, some people only eat when it’s hot out. If you’re one of those people, chances are you have some ice cream in your freezer that’s been there for months if not a year. But the question is, is it still good to eat? Can ice cream go bad?

Believe it or not, ice cream can go bad. It does have an expiration date. For an unopened tub, the shelf life is up to two months. After it’s opened, you have about one to two months to eat it without it tasting off. Keep in mind that “best by” dates can be a little conservative. Some people say you can eat unopened ice cream for up to two to three months past its printed date.

Contrary to popular belief, the freezer doesn’t keep your food fresh forever, it just slows the growth of bacteria, but it doesn’t stop it completely. Because there’s dairy and eggs in ice cream, even thought its pasteurized and frozen, it’s still dairy and it can go bad.

To figure out if ice cream has expired, check to see if there are ice shards on top of the lid and under the ice cream. To make ice cream last longer, make sure the container is closed and your freezer is at 0 degrees F. If you want to be extra cautious, you can place plastic wrap on top of the ice cream to create a seal that slows down the development of ice crystals.
