Focaccia bread is a delicious and versatile Italian flatbread, perfect as a side dish or sandwich base. Follow this simple recipe to create your own fluffy, herb-infused focaccia at home.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Fresh rosemary or other herbs
  • Coarse sea salt

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and 1/4 cup olive oil. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Punch down the dough and spread it out on a greased baking sheet. Use your fingers to dimple the surface of the dough.
  5. Drizzle olive oil over the dough, then sprinkle with fresh rosemary and coarse sea salt. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
