3 Ways to Tell if Your Eggs Have Gone Bad

There are multiple ways to tell if the eggs in your fridge are fresh or need to be discarded. Eggs typically last for weeks if stored properly, so if you’re not sure if yours are still good, there are three things you can do to determine that. You can look at the expiration date on the package first, but if that’s not enough, here’s what to do.

Visual Test

Take a careful look at the eggs and toss them if they have visible cracks, slimy substances on the outside, or any discoloration. Once you crack the egg, check if it looks weird in any way and don’t use the eggs that look suspicious in any way.

Float Test

A fresh egg will sink to the bottom of a dish filled with water, so use this info to test if your eggs are fresh. The old eggs tend to float, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve gone bad, so use other techniques and your best judgment if that happens.

Smell Test

If you crack an egg and notice an unusual smell, that’s a sign you should toss it. Fresh eggs don’t have a strong smell and you will notice immediately if something is off, so if you do, don’t ignore it.
