Universally loved and with so many versions to choose from, cheese is one of the biggest culinary pleasures in the world. But what happens when you buy too much and have to find a way to store it so it doesn’t go bad? Can you freeze cheese?

Cheese comes in many shapes and forms. Different varieties have different properties so when it comes to freezing, there isn’t a universal answer for all of them. One thing that’s common for all of them is that they should be kept in the fridge for short-term storage. But what about freezing them?

You can freeze cheese and make it last longer this way, but this applies only to certain types of cheese. It works with semi-hard cheeses such as cheddar, gouda, havarti, swiss, parmesan, mozzarella, feta, and emmental. You shouldn’t freeze the following types of cheese: brie, cream cheese, camembert, stilton, and low-fat cheeses.

Cheeses that can be frozen should be grated and put in a freezer bag. Another way is to cut them into small pieces and wrap in clingfilm. Large blocks of cheese can lose moisture when frozen.
