Lava cakes are notoriously hard to bake right. Bake them for too long, and there is no lava. Underbake them, and you end up with a cake that falls apart when it comes out of the ramekin.

Luckily, there is a simple trick that you can use to tell if your lava cake is done baking. And it only requires a wooden toothpick.

How to Tell if Your Lava Cake is Done Baking

The trick to test if your lava cake is baked was recently shared by TikTok food content creator @benjaminthebaker. In the video, the TikToker can be seen testing three types of lava cakes with a toothpick: underbaked, overbaked, and properly baked.

According to @benjaminthebaker, when you insert the toothpick in the edge of the lava cake, and it comes out with batter on it, that is a good sign that the cake needs more baking.

If a toothpick inserted at the center of the lava cake comes out clean, that means that it spent too much time in the oven, and you made a sponge cake instead of a lava cake.

Finally, when the toothpick inserted in the edge of the cake comes out clean but comes wet from the batter inserted when inserted in the center, you got yourself a perfectly-baked lava cake.
