When it comes to festive drinks, nothing can compare with a sweet cup of eggnog. While store-bought versions can be tasty, there’s something special about making it at home. Here’s a full-proof recipe with a few customization options to make it your own.
Ingredients
- 6 large egg yolks
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: Rum, bourbon, or brandy for a spirited version
- Ground nutmeg for garnish
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thickened.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
- Slowly pour about a cup of the hot milk mixture into the bowl with the egg yolks while whisking. Gradually add the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan, stirring constantly over low heat.
- Once the mixture has thickened, remove it from the heat and add the vanilla. Stir in your preferred choice of rum, bourbon, or brandy if you’d like, as well.
- Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for a few hours and enjoy!
