When it comes to festive drinks, nothing can compare with a sweet cup of eggnog. While store-bought versions can be tasty, there’s something special about making it at home. Here’s a full-proof recipe with a few customization options to make it your own.

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Rum, bourbon, or brandy for a spirited version
  • Ground nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thickened.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
  3. Slowly pour about a cup of the hot milk mixture into the bowl with the egg yolks while whisking. Gradually add the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan, stirring constantly over low heat.
  4. Once the mixture has thickened, remove it from the heat and add the vanilla. Stir in your preferred choice of rum, bourbon, or brandy if you’d like, as well.
  5. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for a few hours and enjoy!
