If you know how to cook it properly, fish can be one of the most versatile and rewarding foods. It combines well with a number of flavors and works for brunch, a light lunch, or as the signature dinner dish. One of the difficulties of cooking with fish is knowing when the fish is cooked properly and ready to eat. Not only does the taste of your food depend on it, but so does the health of your guests. Here are some simple ways to make sure your fish is always cooked to perfection.

Opaque

When fish is properly cooked it will turn from a translucent color to an opaque pink or white color. This is a quick and easy way to check whether your fish is cooking properly.

Flakes Off Easily

If the flesh has gone opaque, you know that it is nicely cooked if the flesh flakes off easily when you touch it with a fork.

Not Too Hot

A great way to make sure your fish cooks all the way through is to not cook it on too high a heat. This can cook the outside without getting to the meat on the inside.

Flesh is Firm

Check with a fork that the flesh is firm and not a jelly-like consistency.
