Croutons are a delicious addition to soups and salads, and they’re also a great way to use up stale bread. You can buy them at the store, but they taste much better homemade and they’re not very hard to make either. Here’s how to make your own croutons that you can use to top your favorite soup or salad, or to even eat straight off the baking tray.

You’ll need:

  • Bread (especially stale bread, but it doesn’t have to be stale)
  • Butter or olive oil
  • Herbs such as parsley, rosemary, or thyme

Directions

Start by cutting your bread up into cubes as best you can. Place the cubes into a medium-sized mixing bowl and drizzle on enough butter or olive oil to coat the bread. Next, sprinkle on any herbs you like and carefully mix them to coat the bread as well. Then, spread them onto a baking sheet. Bake them at 375 F until they reach your desired browned-and-crisp-ness.

There are also plenty of great options for more interesting flavors as well. You can coat the croutons in garlic powder along with or instead of herbs for garlic bread croutons, add parmesan cheese for parmesan-crusted croutons, or play around with your favorite herbs and spices. It’s tough to go wrong!
