Ice cubes are usually used to cool down your drink on a hot summer day, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Ice cubes actually hide many tricks up their sleeve and there are several unusual ways you can use them in your kitchen, starting with these three.

Skimming Fat

Skimming fat from your soups and stews isn’t an easy task, but ice cubes can help you get it done without breaking a sweat. Place some ice cubes inside a metal ladle, skim its bottom over the soup, and fat will naturally gravitate towards it.

Microwaving Rice

Putting an ice cube on top of your rice before you reheat it may sound contra-productive, but you’ll just have to trust us on this one. Once the ice cube melts, it will slowly steam and help the rice regain its moisture as it reheats.

Salad Dressings

If you’re looking for a way to quickly thicken your salad dressing before drizzling it over your leafy greens, ice cubes will get you there. Place an ice cube inside a salad dressing jar and just shake it up. The ice cube will help harden the oil, and you can simply discard it later.
