Chimney cake aka trdelník is one of the traditional desserts you have to try in Prague, but did you know that you can easily find it outside the Czech Republic? Many of the neighboring countries have their own version of trdelník, it’s just known under a different name.
Hungary
Kürtőskalács is the Hungarian version of this popular dessert, and if we would have to pick the second-best place in Europe to try it after Prague, it would certainly be Budapest.
Romania
It’s believed that the first known recipe for kürtőskalács actually originates from Transylvania, so it’s not much of a surprise that tourists visiting Romania can’t resist it.
Slovakia
Slovakia is also home to one of the oldest versions of the chimney cake recorded in the history books, Skalický trdelník, named after the town of Skalica that it originates from.
Germany
Trdelník can be also found in many German-speaking countries, including Austria and Germany, where it’s known as baumstriezel, but it doesn’t look as elaborate as the chimney cakes you can find in Prague.
