Vegetable salads are cool and all, but if you really want to mix things up for a friendly winter gathering, a business luncheon, or just an extra-fancy snack, you need to check out this winter fruit salad recipe by @thelemonapron ASAP. Everyone is sure to thank you for the much-needed winter power-up!

Here’s what you need to make it:

An assortment of your favorite winter fruits. @thelemonapron recommends a combination of citrus with pineapple, kiwi, and pomegranate arils, as well as berries, bananas, and grapes. Bottom line: go nuts! (you can even add some nuts if you like).

But the real banger is her dressing offer:

Combine an equal amount of honey and lime juice for a perfect sweet-tangy sauce. Then, add a tiny bit of black pepper (yep) and some chopped mint for a finishing touch.

One final pro tip from @thelemonapron: If you happen to stumble upon any kumquats, soak them (sliced) in your dressing for about 10 minutes before you drizzle it on the fruit salad.

Serving recommendation: Serve with a side of yogurt.

A fruit crumble is a classic dessert dish that has sharp fruits such as apples or berries at its heart. You can go for whichever fruit you like, but tart flavors work well such as rhubarb and apple. With fruit and oats at its center, it’s a super healthy dessert option. Here’s a recipe for how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of fresh fruit such as berries, apples or anything you fancy
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar (adjust based on fruit sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare the fruit by washing, peeling, and slicing into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, mix your fruit with granulated sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to let the flavors meld.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cold butter cubes, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, work the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Spread the prepared fruit evenly in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit, covering it completely. Place your baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the fruit is bubbly.
  5. Allow the crumble to cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm, either on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgence.

One of the best things about fruit snacks is that you can prepare them in advance and keep them in the fridge. This is an amazing tip for when you want to eat healthier. Having pre-made healthy snacks in the fridge makes it more likely to reach for them instead of the processed, unhealthy options. However, once you cut an apple the slices go brown very fast. Though there’s nothing wrong with brown apple slices, they may look ugly and unappetizing. Here’s how to easily prevent that from happening.

Once cut, apples go brown because of oxidation. If you manage to keep them away from air, they will remain their original color. One way to do this is to cut the apple with an apple slicer and quickly put the pieces together again, securing them with a rubber band.

If you don’t have an apple slicer or you want to cut an apple into cubes or another shape, do that with a knife and use lemon juice like this: mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and soak the apple slices in the mixture for up to five minutes, then rinse. Store them however you like and they should not brown for several hours.

Dates are native to Northern Africa and the Middle East, although today they are grown in other parts of the world, too. Some of the places in the U.S. where you can find the date palm trees include California, Arizona, and Florida. The plant has evolved to survive high desert temperatures.

How To Use Dates

You can use dates to make cakes, smoothies, energy bars, and many other things. They are often used as a sugar replacement as they are exceptionally sweet. Together with nuts, seeds, and other fruits (dried or fresh), dates make amazing vegan & high-protein energy balls or bars that you can store in the fridge for several days.

Nutritional Benefits

Dates also have many health and nutritional benefits. They contain vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and iron. They are believed to be good for brain health, as well as your overall health. Pregnant women use dates to promote labor and help with contractions as they approach their due date (no pun intended).

Candied fruit is a fun and unique way to top cakes or to eat as a sweet treat. It is very sweet and very hard and crunchy. There are more professional ways of making it that involved candying the entire fruit inside and out, which can take a lot of time depending on its size and moisture content. But luckily, it’s not too hard to make your own fruit with a candy coating. Here’s how to do it.

Start with your washed fruit, chopped into bite-sized pieced. You’ll need some long skewers as you’ll be dipping the fruit into boiling hot sugar! Spear the fruit on skewers, arranged how you’ll want to serve it.

You’ll now need granulated sugar and water, 2 parts sugar to 1 part water. Also, if you have a candy thermometer, it will be of great use to you here.

Finally, before you start cooking, have a sheet pan ready with parchment paper on which to place the hot candied fruit. If your parchment paper isn’t as non-stick as you’d like, you can grease it as well.

Now, bring the sugar and water to boil and get it up to 300 degrees F. This may take up to ten minutes. Once it’s at temperature, dip your skewers in the boiling water and immediately place them on the parchment paper to cool. Enjoy as soon as they’ve cooled and hardened, or store in the fridge to maintain the crunch.

Now that we’re in the midst of grilling season we bet you’ve been throwing meat, fish, potatoes, and veggies on the grill. But there’s something you’ve been missing—fruits. Have you grilled fruits before? When you grill fruits, they become caramelized, sweet, and crunchy. They make a delicious, but healthy dessert or side dish. Some fruits are meant to be grilled and here are five you must try.

Bananas

Bananas caramelize beautifully on the grill and they’re even better when topped with ice cream, caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, cinnamon, brown sugar, or rum.

Watermelon

Watermelon is already a staple at barbecues, but you can make it even more delicious by grilling it. Grilled watermelon is amazing by itself, in salads, or as the base of summer desserts.

Peaches

Grilled peaches are to die for in vanilla ice cream, especially when they’re topped with a drizzle of oil. They’re also really great in salads and cocktails.

Pineapple

Instead of putting pineapple on a kebab, pair it with sorbet or in cocktails. You can even serve it by itself, for a delicious, no-fuss side dish.

Mangoes

Mangoes are a common ingredient in sweet salsas, so they work well when grilled and served with meats.

Eating more fruit is a great way to improve your diet, but you can also use fruit to replace unhealthy ingredients in your diet, such as sugar. Read on to find out what are some of the best and sweetest fruits that you can easily use as an alternative to sugar.

Dates

Dates are by far one of the sweetest fruits you’ll find out there, which makes them a perfect alternative to sugar. Using dates as a garnish for pasta, pancakes, and salads is a great way to make these dishes more flavorful, or you can simply mix them into smoothies instead of sugar.

Applesauce

The best way to use up all those apples in the kitchen is to make tasty homemade applesauce that can be used as a healthy replacement for sugar.

Figs

Use a blender or a food processor to make a rich and sweet puree that you can later add to pancakes, muffins, smoothies or Greek yogurt to make them more flavorful.

Bananas

Bananas are another sweet fruit that you can puree and add to various baked foods such as pancakes, bread, and muffins. This will help you reduce the amount of sugar in these recipes and make your baked goods super fluffy.
