A fruit crumble is a classic dessert dish that has sharp fruits such as apples or berries at its heart. You can go for whichever fruit you like, but tart flavors work well such as rhubarb and apple. With fruit and oats at its center, it’s a super healthy dessert option. Here’s a recipe for how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of fresh fruit such as berries, apples or anything you fancy
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar (adjust based on fruit sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare the fruit by washing, peeling, and slicing into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, mix your fruit with granulated sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to let the flavors meld.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cold butter cubes, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, work the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Spread the prepared fruit evenly in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit, covering it completely. Place your baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the fruit is bubbly.
  5. Allow the crumble to cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm, either on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgence.
