With so many types of oats out there, it’s hard to keep track! Here’s a list of all your go-to oats so you can make your life more simple.
Oat Groats
Oat groats are the entire oat with only the husk removed. These are the least processed oats, which means the nutritional value of these oats is the highest. They also take the longest to cook, just under an hour, and will come out looking a bit like rice.

Steel-Cut Oats
These oats are actually just oat groats that have been cut into smaller pieces. Since they are smaller, they cook more easily and quicker than oat groats, while still maintaining all the health benefits. However, they are no equipped to be baked with or cooked in the microwave, so keep that in mind.
Rolled Oats
This is an oat groat that has been seamed, rolled out, and steamed again, hence the name. These cook very quickly on the stove, about 5 minutes, or 2 minutes in the microwave. You can also easily bake with them.
Quick Oats
These oats are rolled oats that have been cooked slightly. Their flavor and texture are not as appealing as rolled oats, but they cook in about 1 minute.
