This Creative Chef Makes “Bacon” Using a Banana Peel

Whether you’re a vegan, a sustainable eater, or simply someone who’s open to new, creative recipes, replacing meat products with plant alternatives is always fun. We recently saw an interesting new post by food blogger and chef Charles W. Hunter III, who shared the recipe for banana peel “bacon” on his Twitter account. It quickly went viral on social media as many people wanted to know how that’s possible.

As he explains, banana peels can be turned into fake bacon by using a flavorful marinade that’s made with soy sauce, Worcestershire, liquid smoke, and some other ingredients. The peels need to sit in the fridge for a while in order to soak up the marinade flavor, and they can then be cooked in a pan. It’s important to start with a cold pan and to flip the banana peels often, so they don’t caramelize too quickly.

The process requires some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be left with a perfect vegan substitute for bacon that you can make whenever you want. However, Hunter explains that “in no way does this taste like bacon”, which is important so you know what to expect. It only looks like bacon and has a distinct taste that you’ll likely love once you try it.
