The fact that there’s no “healthy eating formula” that works for all of us makes choosing food very complicated and it gets even harder when you’re pregnant. Suddenly, you’re responsible for another life growing inside of you and you want to provide it everything it needs through proper nutrition. Here are three food rules that should be followed in pregnancy.

Don’t Eat for Two

Pregnant women used to hear all the time that they should eat for two, but fortunately, we now know that’s not the case. Starting from the second trimester, you only need 300-500 additional calories for the baby (plus 300 more if you’re carrying twins) and it’s very important that they come from nutritionally dense foods.

No Raw Food

Raw fish, eggs, and meat can cause viral and bacterial infections that you definitely don’t want in pregnancy. It can be difficult for sushi fans, but it’s worth following to avoid risking your baby’s health.

Limit Caffeine

While you don’t have to give up on coffee entirely, you should limit your daily caffeine intake to 200 mg per day. Just remember that coffee is not the only thing that contains caffeine—it’s also in tea, soda, and chocolate. A cup of coffee per day is generally okay.
