Honey is something of a controversial gray area for vegans. As more and more people opt for a vegan diet, the question of honey’s legitimacy becomes more pressing.
Vegans follow a strictly plant-based diet. Although some vegans do this for health reasons, often this choice derives from a concern to minimize animal exploitation and cruelty towards animals. For these reasons, vegans don’t eat animal products such as meat, milk, cheese, and eggs.
However, products produced by insects such as honey aren’t always so clear cut. Are insects considered animals? Do they feel pain in the same way mammals do?
Most vegans don’t eat honey as they argue that it is still a form of animal exploitation and point out that many beekeepers harm their bees in the process of farming their honey. Instead, they use alternative sweeteners such as sugar, maple syrup, or molasses.
However, there are some vegans who feel that honey is fair game—especially because the act doesn’t involve eating the bees, and can be carried out in a respectful and un-invasive way.
When it comes down to honey, it really comes down to the individual’s preference. Nevertheless, it’s always important to be respectful to others no matter their choice!
