What Makes a Cobbler, Crisp, and Crumble Different?

Cobblers, crisps, and crumbles are all in the same dessert family. They are all a fruit-based dish with some sort of topping, but what gives them their unique style? If you are struggling with these desserts, this is the guide for you!

Cobblers

The reason cobblers are called as such is that they were named after the cobblestone roads that they resemble. What sets a cobbler apart from the rest is that the topping is actually made of out of a biscuit dough, which is probably the most difficult topping of the three to make, but is absolutely worth it.

Crisps

What defines a crisp from a crumble is the addition of oats which crisp up in the oven, hence the name, crisp. To make a crisp topping, you generally combine either white or brown sugar, oats, flour, and cinnamon. The topping comes together very quickly and is slightly healthier because of the addition of oats.

Crumble

A crumble shares the same recipe as a crisp, but instead of using oats, replace it with butter. This gives the topping a richer and more crumbly top, which is why it is called a crumble.
