During the colder, darker months, many of us can end up feeling worn down and fatigued. Whilst sleep quality and prioritizing rest are important, our diets can also impact our energy levels significantly. If you need a pick-me-up, try eating one of these foods which is sure to energize you and put a spring in your step.

Citrus Fruits

Not only are citrus fruits high in vitamin C, which helps maintain a healthy immune system, the bright colors of oranges, lemons and limes, plus their stunning scents, can help enliven you on a cold winter’s day. Eat an orange, try a lemon slice in black tea, or squeeze a lime all over your nachos for a quick energy burst.

Nuts

Nuts offer a plethora of health benefits, and are a particularly good choice if you’ve got the mid-afternoon slump. High in fat, protein, and a range of brain-boosting vitamins, a handful of nuts (raw or roasted) can do great things for your energy on a slow day. Eating nuts with fruit can also slow down the rate at which your body processes the fruit sugars, helping to keep you sated and feeling more balanced throughout the day.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a healthier alternative to milk chocolate, meaning you can get your mid-morning fix whilst feeling less guilty about your choice of snack. Dark chocolate also contains small levels of caffeine, so can be a great choice when you need an energy burst (without the quick drop in energy which can come from eating high sugar snacks like milk chocolate).

Snacking on these energy-boosting foods during the winter can help you feel more awake and provide you with a healthy intake of essential nutrients too.
